The Silk Tree or Mimosa, like many other non-native plants, was intentionally introduced to Europe in the Eighteenth Century and shortly thereafter into the United States as an ornamental shrub. This tree is known to be allelopathic to neighboring plants, which means that is can prohibit the growth of many native plants. Here a mimosa is crowding out a native Beauty Berry Shrub. Durham Open Space and Trails Matching Grant. Chinese Privet or more commonly known as just Privet was introduced many years ago as a landscaping shrub. It is fast growing and easy to trim into hedge fence. It is still sold by some stores for this purpose. It thrives in damp areas and will quickly take over entire areas of a wetland forest like parts of Sandy Creek and the New Hope Creek, crowding out all other native shrubs and trees.
