Santa Fe Steeze

Life in Santa Fe New Mexico. Thursday, April 12, 2012. Raney and Jonathan's Easter Buffet. As I mentioned in my last post, Raney and Jonathan invited me to their annual Easter party last Sunday. It's always a great time because there is a nice mix of old and young, great food and activities for everyone. Both Jonathan and Raney are great cooks so, as you can see in the photos above, the food was incredible—assorted appetizers to start and a paella feast later in the afternoon. Can you believe it? Santa Fe Steeze: March 2012

http://www.santafesteeze.blogspot.com/2012_03_01_archive.html

Life in Santa Fe New Mexico. Wednesday, March 21, 2012. Are We Spring Yet? Entrance to my Courtyard, May 2011. Well, the first day of spring is finally here (I am so done with winter) but, since I live in Santa Fe, I have to be a little more patient. March teases me with a few really nice warm days and then shoves my face into a pile of 45 degree cold and windy mess like I'm a puppy that crapped on the floor. Daffodils and Tulips, April 2011. CAN WE. STOP? Iris bed, April 2011. Mostly my brother and I wo...

LAND OF THE ZIA: WALKABOUT '09 - DAY 4 - MILE 596 - THE VIEW

http://gmcbuddlowdown.blogspot.com/2009/04/day-4-mile-596-view.html

WALKABOUT '09 - DAY 4 - MILE 596 - THE VIEW. From the Grand Canyon we headed north. It was weird.the Grand Canyon just seemed to end. Not long after leaving the Grand Canyon; however, we came across another 'not so grand' canyon. This one cost $2 bucks to get in [as opposed to the $25 per car fee at the GC]. It was actually pretty impressive. Along side of the canyon was a Native American market place where I picked up some pottery and a cool handcrafted Christmas ornament. Now as to be expected, this ki...

Quarai is the smallest of the three monuments and dates back to about 1300 A.D. It's early indian dwellers were farmers and traders. Between 1626 and1628 Fray Juan Guiterrez arrived and began the conversion of the local natives to Christianity. The church was built by pueblo women and children around 1630. WALKABOUT '09 - DAY 2 - MILE 118 - INSCRIPTION ROCK [*UPDATED! After hiking down from Acoma, we headed further west for another hike to what is known today as Inscription Rock at El Morro. El Morro National Monument is located on an ancient east-west trail in western New Mexico. The main feature of this monument is a great sandstone bluff with a pool of water at its base, a shaded oasis that has seen many travelers. This is the pool that many travelers, including us, have stopped at over the centuries.

LAND OF THE ZIA: CITY IN THE SKY

http://gmcbuddlowdown.blogspot.com/2007/08/city-in-sky.html

CITY IN THE SKY. This is my 100th post. WOO-HOOOOO! In 1540 Francisco Vasquez de Coronado [see my post: CITIES OF GOLD] visited the people of Acoma in search of the seven cities of gold. The city of Acoma is on a rock formation 367 feet high and 7000 feet above sea level. Coronado along with 300 Spaniards and 1,000 Mexican Indians, led an assault [like that of Masada] against the Acomans, eventually taking the mesa. Unfortunately you are not allowed to take pictures inside the church or of the cemetary.

I know I know.where the hell have I been? One by one I have seen my friends blogs just . stop. Months and months go by and more and more stop posting. Is it finally time for me to try facebook? I am sad to report that the area trails were washed away. You only know your way by ribbons tied around charred trees that lead you to the now closed cliff dwellings. If you go I recommend good waterproof hiking boots as you will have to cross streams where bridges were washed away. If not you, who? Another place ...

LAND OF THE ZIA: The Visit

http://gmcbuddlowdown.blogspot.com/2012/03/my-buddy-t-rob-out-of-oklahoma-was-in.html

My buddy T-Rob out of Oklahoma was in town last week for some r&r. I was able to have some snowy peaks waiting for him. As of this writing, Sandia Peak still has a 42 inch base. Although the peaks were snowy, in town it was mild and in the 50's. Perfect for a trip to the Rio Grande Zoo and Biological Park. On this visit, we would head north to Santa Fe, Taos and the northern frontier. The story was the subject of the 1998 movie 'The Staircase' starring Barbara Hershey and William Petersen. I took a littl...

LAND OF THE ZIA: The Long Walk of Barboncito

http://gmcbuddlowdown.blogspot.com/2010/04/long-walk-of-barboncito.html

The Long Walk of Barboncito. In the midst of the Civil War, the U.S. military decided to move the Navajo people forcibly from their traditional homeland to a tiny reservation on the high plains of east-central New Mexico called Bosque Redondo near Fort Sumner [where Billy the Kid would eventually be shot and buried]. The Navajo leader at the time was a man called Barboncito [Little Beard - what the Navajo called a 'mustache' ], a noted spiritual leader. Specifically, Canyon de Chelly [pronounced 'shay'].
