The satellite team is building a satellite as part of a competition sponsored by the University Nanosatellite Program, specifically the Nanosat-6 competition. The requirements are to build a satellite under 50 kg, including propellant, which fits into a 50cm x 50cm x 60cm box and includes an ESPA ring attachment. Our MIT OSMV satellite was selected to compete in the 2009-2011 competition called NanoSat-6 for an anticipated launch date of 2012 or 2013.

We are pursuing collaborations with the Edgerton Center and the Department of Earth, Atmospheric and Planetary Sciences. We work with the Gordon Engineering Leadership (GEL) program as well. Students have been able to work on UROPs with the MIT Satellite Team, and these projects are expected to continue. We are also always looking for students from all disciplines and years at MIT to join our team!

The propulsion team is responsible for the main engine, xenon fuel tank, and plumbing from the xenon tank to the main engine. The engine works by ionizing Xenon atoms and repelling electrically charged plasma of Xenon. Xenon flows into the cathode; ions are captured in the keeper, and electrons are released. These electrons are ionized in the cone, and electrons gather on the anode. Plasma is released, providing thrust.

On Saturday, May 2, 2009, the MIT Satellite Team sent representatives to the Sally Ride Science Festival, which was aimed at 5th to 8th grade students, particularly girls, to get them interested in science. The team displayed the satellite mass mockup and solar arrays for students and their parents, and they answered questions about the satellite, space, and science in general.

The Structures team is responsible for design of the primary structural components, secondary (mounting) structural components, separation from the Launch Vehicle, solar array deployment and actuation, management of the CAD model, placement of components, and inertia tensors, and static and dynamic verification of structures in the operational environments.

The research activities of the satellite group started in 1996 at the University of Heidelberg with the analysis of the spectra of the recently launched satellite instrument GOME on ERS-2.
