Balkerne Tower Trust Ltd. Is a Company Limited by Guarantee, No 5705606. It was initially set up in an attempt to bid for Jumbo when the building was sold by auction in February 2006. We decided to remain in being, if only to be involved with the public access scheme which was part of the penthouse conversion for which permission had been granted on appeal by the previous owner. However work on this conversion never started and permission expired in December 2006. Our Patron is Sir Bob Russell.

A BRIEF HISTORY OF JUMBO. Less than half of Colchester's streets have a water main. Town wells are shallow and contaminated. People store water in open jugs and basins. Dysentry and diarrhoea are common. Public Health Act. Local Councils are made responsible for public health. Council buys private waterworks from Peter Bruff at an inflated price. The Balkerne Water Tower is a structure of exceptional architectural and historic interest, and is of great importance both nationally and locally. 8211; Historic England. The Grade II* listed Jumbo is the largest remaining Victorian water tower in Britain, and an increasingly rare example of one in an original condition. Despite brave and impressive efforts from Balkerne Tower Trust who managed to raise £40,000 or thereabouts in the space of 4 weeks simply by asking they were beaten easily. Saturday, 31 May 2014. Tropical Wings Zoo - South Woodham Ferrers. When you're running in a slightly aged campervan it's a good idea to stay close to home. So off I went to a fairly local Britstop. There's a whole village load of antiques. A pub, several cafes and a tea room at the very top of a 5 storey mill. But even better than that there's a zoo within 3 miles. And it's a humdinger of a zoo called Tropical Wings. It's relatively small, t he wolves haven't arrived let alone escaped. No big cat in sight.
