Meta-Morph It.: Data Viz
http://meta-morphit.blogspot.com/2010/03/data-viz.html
As this really smart Economist piece. Points out, we suddenly live in a vast universe of data, but most of it is just piling up because we don't yet know how to "extract wisdom" from it. Well, in my experience, wisdom often comes from visualization, which is why I think data visualization is an essential piece of the new media DNA. A big part of the future of journalism, says Jay Rosen. Is explanation. Context! Data visualization is pure explanation, pure context, instant wisdom. March 15, 2010 at 7:32 AM.

March 14, 2010 at 6:16 PM. I personally think of news as the what of journalism. Although news (the plural of new) emphasizes the novelty of an event, the most important characteristic of news is to be interesting. To be interesting means to engage the readers mind in any of an infinite number of ways. Instead, the journalist must recognize the diversity of his potential readers and offer many different reasons to be interested in the what of his journalism. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom).
Oh, hi | Arch-Anemone

Is Google Making Us Ironic? November 23, 2010. I’ve neglected this blog, I know. It’s like a dead jellyfish washed ashore, melting slowly in the sun into a pile of formless ooze. With some crabs or something picking at it, probably. Unfortunately, today is not the day I stop neglecting it. I do have a post up at Discover about barnacle penises. So… call it even? Whale barnacles | Arch-Anemone
https://maragrunbaum.wordpress.com/2010/03/22/whale-barnacles
Deep sea, deep fried. Is Google Making Us Ironic? March 22, 2010. I have a new story. Up on Scienceline on whale barnacles. Namely: How on Earth do barnacles get onto whales in the first place? The ocean is huge, barnacle larvae are tiny, whales are rare it seems, as marine biologist John Zardus says in the story, “preposterous.”. That’s the spirit! And also maybe why he’s still trying to find grant funding, but whatever.). Check out the story here. Science reporter in New York City. Deep sea, deep fried.

Meta-Morph It.: Explanation
http://meta-morphit.blogspot.com/2010/03/explanation.html
There has been a fair amount of online discussion and tweeting lately about the "role" of journalism and journalists, specifically in the context of science journalism. Some of the most interesting examples, in no particular order: A well-argued essay by Bora Zivkovic, aka @BoraZ. Posted on his Scienceblog. A thought-provoking set of interviews with several of today's most visible science journalists. By Ontario-based science journalist Colin Schultz. And a fascinating recorded discussion. A conversation...

I don't get drunk, I get awesome. Twitter chief exec Ev Williams recently discussed one of his company's biggest problems: too many people don't understand how to use their product. 8220;Twitter is too hard to use,” he said while speaking at Chirp, Twitter’s developer conference. In San Francisco. He later added, “We’ve known this for a long time, but it was growing too fast for us to address these issues.”. Ok ok, Twitter is hard. Here's how to get started using it:. Meta-Morph It.: Crisp Commentary
http://meta-morphit.blogspot.com/2010/05/crisp-commentary.html
I'm beginning to accept that the web-based argument between those that say journalists should leave science communication to scientists, and those, myself included, who think that's one of the worst ideas ever, is just one of those eternal conflicts like Democrats v. Republicans and Yankees v. Red Sox. As a scientifically-minded journalist-in-training, I find this to be a relief. For the past few months, the debate has caused an annoying level of cognitive dissonance, which is finally subsiding. It concl...
