Plays - Saying It Forward

http://www.sayingitforward.ca/plays

My Blog/If Memory Serves. A Present for the Future. The following is the opening to my play. The main character is a vigorous 89-year-old woman named Vera who protests the removal of a statue from a park by chaining herself to it late one night. It is there she meets Barry, a security guard, and Cassie and Kurt, two teenagers. I don’t do anything fast anymore. My dad bought this really expensive refrigerator–“the latest thing,” right? I remember standing as still as a statue. More about Jean Sheppard.

Possessed - Saying It Forward

http://www.sayingitforward.ca/possessed

My Blog/If Memory Serves. A Present for the Future. May 20, 2015. One Christmas, when I was about seven, I bought my mother a plastic lily from Woolworth’s. My little. I imagine that when my mother opened her gift on that Christmas morning so long ago my older brothers and sister smothered laughter and my phlegmatic father lit another cigarette from the red and gold pack. I am sure that my mother smiled her gentle smile and kissed my head. But why do I remember the lily at this moment? Are we our stories?

My Blog/If Memory Serves. A Present for the Future. Arlene Moscovitch, writer and documentary filmmaker. I cannot recommend Jean Sheppard highly enough as an editor: for the last 13 years, she has been an invaluable editor of my poetry, creative non-fiction, and fiction. She is highly dedicated and skilled, with a wonderful sense of humour, and a great deal of compassion. She makes you want to continue to write, but to write better! Camilla Morrow, author of. Laura Kathryn McRae, teacher and poet.

Making Eye Statements: Staying Humble...

http://makingeyestatements.blogspot.com/2017/01/staying-humble.html

Wednesday, 11 January 2017. 8220;In a humble state, you learn better.”. Ah yes, staying humble…the key to learning…. Well, yesterday I was feeling very humble indeed at the Art Gallery of Ontario. But happy humble. Let me explain, with apologies to my experienced camera friends, for whom the following may reek of naiveté. Cue the eye rolling…. Present when she was needed, in the background when she wasn’t, she got us all working through aperture settings, shutter speeds, ISO settings, and white bal...

Sunday, 27 November 2016. A Barn of One's Own. Inside a barn is a whole universe, with its own time zone and climate and ecosystem,. A shadowy world of swirling dust illuminated in tiger stripes by light shining through the cracks between the boards. Old leather tack, lengths of chain, rope, and baling twine dangled from nails and rafters and draped over stall railings. Generations of pocketknives lay lost in the layers of detritus on the floor.". Carolyn Jourdan, American author. Unites her passion for ...

Making Eye Statements: June 2016

http://makingeyestatements.blogspot.com/2016_06_01_archive.html

Monday, 27 June 2016. Those Magnificent Young Folks in Their Flying Machines! Last weekend, the Quinte International Air Show (QIAS) roared to life at Canadian Forces Base Trenton. And what a great show it was! I have always loved just being around airplanes. Never, ever to be a pilot, but simply to admire the design and the engineering, and to marvel endlessly about the miracle of flight. For me, watching a plane take off is literally awesome. When a plane flies over, I always look up! In the midst of l...

Making Eye Statements: July 2016

http://makingeyestatements.blogspot.com/2016_07_01_archive.html

Tuesday, 26 July 2016. The Usual Seen Unusually. The starting point for today’s posting comes from the late American photographer, Beaumont Newhall: “We are not interested in the unusual, but in the usual seen unusually.” I’m not sure who the “we” is in this quotation, but I do know that Newhall (1908-1993) was an influential photographer, curator, critic, and author, best known for his still popular book The History of Photography. I’ve been taking photography seriously for about two years now, an...

Larry Sultan (1946-2009), American Photographer. I’m writing this blog posting on the penultimate day of 2016. The past two weeks have been lovingly filled with feasts, guests, and gifts. Making Eye Statements: Creating My Own Private World

Wednesday, 4 January 2017. Creating My Own Private World. 8220;Photography, as we all know, is not real at all. It is an illusion of reality with which we create our own private world.”. Arnold Newman, American Photographer, 1918-2006. My first blog of the new year…and I start with an unCanadian confessional hat trick: I don’t like the winter; I don’t like the cold; I don’t like the snow. There, I said it. And I hope the ghosts of Chief Dan George, Sir John A. Macd. Which brings me to this week’s b...

Saying It Doesn't Make It So

Saying It Doesn't Make It So. This is just a blog about the latest and greatest happenings in my life. Sunday, August 3, 2014. Gatlinburg trip part three: hiking the Smokies. Despite some less than ideal weather during our trip we didn't feel like we could leave without hiking in the Smokies so we opted to spend our last morning in town hiking. We started the day off with a pancake breakfast at this cute bear restaurant. We kissed the little bear for good luck! We did get some smiles out of the eventually.

Personal history service: legacy letters, ethical wills, memoirs

My Blog/If Memory Serves. A Present for the Future. Humanity’s legacy of stories and storytelling is the most precious we have. All wisdom is in our stories and songs. My great-uncle, Harry Radcliffe, is, to borrow the words of Winston Churchill, a riddle, wrapped in a mystery, inside an enigma. All I know of him is what I can glean from this photo postcard he addressed to his niece, my mother, in 1932. What did he learn from his travels? If he could speak, what would he say about what mattered to him?

English Poetry

Saying it in Urdu and English. Sunday, September 14, 2014. Time is the friend time is the foe. Time is the one that watches you go. Like a building on waterlogged land. Just a bit in the beginning, barely it shows. Like a shadow in a crevice or a corner, it grows. Water then creeps, water then crawls. Water then slithers onto the walls. Slinking to the ceiling, leaving its mark. In wrinkles and creases and blisters and scars. The beams will sag and the rafters will groan. Entrapped in a watery bane.

Urdu Poetry

Saying it in Urdu and English. Sunday, January 5, 2014.

I'll say it once!

I'll say it once! Wednesday, March 13, 2013. I have to write in my blog now and get everything clear. Please bear with me because my typing is terrible, and my thoughts are not only scattered, I can’t even count on their veracity. For weeks in February I had been feeling physically and physicallly. I felt nauseaus and I couldn’t sleep. I kept losing my balance. But I thought I was rolling along alright. Until Tuesday, March 10, a date I may never fully remember. It was really my only chance, though.
