York in a Day | the darker side of night
https://thedarkersideofnight.wordpress.com/2014/05/30/york-in-a-day
The darker side of night. York in a Day. On May 30, 2014. Pre-empting my 4.45 alarm clock, I crawled out of bed at 4.25am, had breakfast and made sandwiches for lunch. My train departed from Kings Cross at 7.08am, arriving in York at 9.25am, which gave me enough time to find my way from the station to the Yorvik museum, pre-booked for ten o’clock. From Clifford’s Tower, it was a short walk to the York Castle Museum, which featured a reconstruction of a Victorian Street. Seeing these shops and back al...

The darker side of night. All posts for the month May, 2013. On May 8, 2013. I had an appointment at the eye hospital today, which is ironic as I hate going to the doctor unless I’m so ill, I’m nagged and dragged there, metaphorically kicking and screaming. Foolishly, at my last optician’s appointment, I mentioned a couple of episodes of blurred vision and strange zigzagging light in my right eye, which eased after resting with eyes closed for half an hour. Four in the morning. In the basement of sleep.

The darker side of night. On August 4, 2016. Thankfully as I grew older the migraines lessened, though the memory still lingers.

Switzerland 2013 | the darker side of night
https://thedarkersideofnight.wordpress.com/travels
The darker side of night. Thursday 16 May 22 2013. Our taxi arrived at 10am, whisking us to Luton airport, though with the North Circular and M1 there is always the worry that it will be a slow crawl rather than a fast journey. However, we were lucky and traffic was fairly light. On the train we sat next to an elderly woman travelling to Lugano. She was originally from Austria and chatted to us (well mum mostly as my German isn’t up to much more than getting the gist of a conversation.). It took two hour...

Boats and Words and Yesterday’s Scenes | the darker side of night
https://thedarkersideofnight.wordpress.com/2013/10/04/boats-and-words-and-yesterdays-scenes
The darker side of night. Boats and Words and Yesterday’s Scenes. On October 4, 2013. It’s been a busy week, full of contrasts, starting on Monday with a trip to the theatre to watch a new show, From Here to Eternity, which was very good, especially the two leading actors. Unfortunately, an eye infection meant the stage lights dazzled and irritated so I couldn’t fully appreciate impact of the slow motion scene where Hawaii is bombed. The autumn evening settles down. People jostle and push’. Thursday was ...

Technoholic | the darker side of night
https://thedarkersideofnight.wordpress.com/2013/09/28/technoholic
The darker side of night. On September 28, 2013. I confess. I’m a technoholic. I love my gadgets – phone, laptop and tablets ( a 7 and a 10 ). Why do you need two? A friend asks, not comprehending that each fulfils a different purpose. The smaller tablet is handy for carrying around in my handbag and the bigger one much more convenient for typing in Office Suite and when I’m alone in hotel rooms. If you are buying a new one can I have the smaller one? Sitting on the bus. Surfing on my phone. Address neve...

A Stroll Down Memory Lane | the darker side of night
https://thedarkersideofnight.wordpress.com/2014/09/21/a-stroll-down-memory-lane
The darker side of night. A Stroll Down Memory Lane. On September 21, 2014. Yesterday I caught the train to central London and went for a stroll down memory lane. It was the thirtieth anniversary of the Calthorpe Project,. Summers meant the Mela and the Latin Festivals, plenty of music, dancing, food and drink with a strong South American and Asian flavour. I had the best home-made curries there and danced till late to a mixture of Latin and British music. It was so good catching up, swapping photos and ...

National Poetry Day | the darker side of night
https://thedarkersideofnight.wordpress.com/2016/10/07/national-poetry-day
The darker side of night. On October 7, 2016. Trust in dreams, for in them is hidden the gate to eternity. Yesterday was National Poetry Day. And all around the country readings, poetry slams and open mic sessions took place. The theme this year was messages. One of the authors, Michaela Morgan. Who I follow on facebook, secretly left poems in envelopes on the seats of a train heading North from St Pancras. She hoped it would brighten someone’s day. At Redbridge Central Library. In the early dawn. You ar...
