Inventions and Innovations | Science Non-Fiction

A graduate student blog. Category Archives: Inventions and Innovations. July 26, 2016. Pokemon GO-bal Positioning System. Earlier this July, my childhood dream finally came true. Over the series’ 20 year history, I’ve played more than 30. I can find a Pidgey (the Pigeon Pokemon) on a city sidewalk thanks to GPS telling Pokemon GO where I am. Finding a Goldeen (the Goldfish Pokemon) on the same city street would not make sense. Such as Water-type Pokemon close to rivers and Fire-type Pokemon in deserts.

Trash to Gas: A Solution to Half Our Problems? | Science Non-Fiction

A graduate student blog. March 26, 2015. Trash to Gas: A Solution to Half Our Problems? In Robert Zemeckis’ “Back to the Future,” Doc can toss garbage straight into the engine to power his car. New innovation from scientists, read the subject line from my Mom’s email. Attached was a link to a Youtube clip. Is our energy future bright? More recently, the US Army invested $3 million in a Sacramento-based gasification project. The trash-to-gas technology of the US Army is plasma gasification.* Sounds li...

A graduate student blog. July 13, 2016. Photo of iron sulfate dumping off the coast of Canada from http:/ phys.org/news/2012-10-canadian-knew-sea-fertilizing.html. In the summer of 2012, scientist and entrepreneur Russ George sailed purposefully past the coast of Vancouver to the archipelago of Haida Gwaii. There, he proceeded to dump 100 tons of iron sulfate into 10,000 square miles of ocean. Most experts, however, were infuriated. How could an experiment with such good intentions have gone so wrong?

Chitra | Science Non-Fiction

A graduate student blog. November 17, 2015. When I was a little girl, chocolate bars were always a special treat I got when I behaved myself. So anytime I got good grades or helped with the chores, my mom would break two little squares out of the chocolate bar in the fridge and hand them to me. Sometimes, for lesser achievements, one square, but never more than two. The chocolate commercials on television always. Continue reading →. February 4, 2015. How cold is it really? Some Holiday Reindeer Science – SciCrazy

https://scicrazy.wordpress.com/2014/12/24/some-holiday-reindeer-science

December 24, 2014. Some Holiday Reindeer Science. Have you ever wondered how animals who live near the poles know when to sleep, what with the long seasons of mostly light or mostly dark days? Behavior (sleep/wake, brain activity, physical activity). Physiology (hormone levels, metabolism, body temp). Cellular functions (cell cycle and maintenance). Gene expression (e.g. transcription). However, and this is a side note: melatonin levels do decrease with exposure to light even late at night. That is why s...

Here is my [overdue] tribute: a brief summary of our progress toward eradicating HIV from this planet. Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) in brief:. Mind-Reading and Manipulation – SciCrazy

November 16, 2014. So, as it has been some time since my last post (I have a. Good excuse, trust me), I know you’ve had plenty of time to think about the possible negative ramifications of developing the technology to read someone’s mind. We can start with the obvious: it’s a plain and simple invasion of privacy. I remember hearing about the Patriot Act sometime after its implementation in 2001, and thinking,. These networks are different for every person, and moreover, they’re constantly changing ...

Recycling Vision

http://www.theconceptsproject.com/recycling-vision

By The Concepts Project. Wouldn’t it be great if we took things that we had used and shipped them off somewhere for specialists to process and send back to us for reuse? To this you might say, Um, yes, that would be called the genius, human-generated idea of recycling. And to you, I reply, Of course I know this is already a thing. I just brought it up to snarkily point out that nature came up with it first. If there’s a good idea, you can bet nature had it before we did. You were an Egyptian with night b...

Understanding the Sunk Cost Fallacy

http://www.theconceptsproject.com/understanding-the-sunk-cost-fallacy

Understanding the Sunk Cost Fallacy. Understanding the Sunk Cost Fallacy. By The Concepts Project. At the beginning of this year, I bought an annual bus pass to get onto my university campus. Halfway through the year, though, I realised that I hated getting the bus: it was always crowded and wasting so much time waiting for busses was driving me mad. If I drove instead, I’d be much happier - but I’d have to shell out for a parking permit. I decided it was, for what it’s worth - I truly hate that bus).

Offsetting Behavior

By The Concepts Project. Suppose I told you that putting on a seatbelt makes you drive more dangerously. You might think, "why would wearing a seatbelt change how I drive? Well, suppose I told you instead about a different car modification: a very sharp spike that attaches to the front of the steering wheel, so that if you brake suddenly you'll fly into the spike. What would that do to your driving? But if the spike makes us drive extra carefully then another way of saying the same thing is that. Now, of...
