Highland Cattle: The Horned or the Hornless? | Scorrybreck Farm

From highland cattle to homestead, growing a farm. Highland Cattle: The Horned or the Hornless? July 11, 2015. July 17, 2015. If I asked you what your perception of a highland was, what would you say? Would you mention the striking set of horns, their characteristic shaggy coat? Perhaps you might comment on the flavorsome and well-marbled beef, or even the cute, fluffy calves? But would you, or could you picture a Highland as a polled breed? Not polled, but hornless. The downside of this is the cost of s...

From highland cattle to homestead, growing a farm. March 1, 2016. So after a few months of blood, sweat, tears, blisters, two excavators, two tractors, a bobcat, a crane, LOTS more gravel, having to build the race section three times and a whole list of expletives, I can now finally say that we have a brand new set of cattle yards installed on the farm. Hurrah! The old yards, on their last legs. Level is where the lump near the top of the stick is…. There is still some work left to do – fencing aro...

From highland cattle to homestead, growing a farm. April 27, 2015. Now that James and I have moved to the new farm, we felt the time was right to add another canine friend to our family. As a rule we don’t let Deva into where the stock are; she is a large hunting dog, highland calves are small and their mothers very protective. Why risk a situation when it can be avoided altogether? Deva, our Irish Wolfhound x Staghound. Get Deva a doggy friend! Meet Rupert our 12 week old Staghound dog! New calf →.

The unimproved pasture grasses are slow to bounce back with the lack of moisture and our creeks are no longer actively flowing. Straight into the feed! Nevertheless I will be keep my fingers crossed that we get some decent rainfall soon so the pasture can bounce back and dams fill up again. November 24, 2015.

Brazos Bend State Park →. Chappell Hill Bluebonnet Festival. April 15, 2015. Last week Ad and I drove about an hour northwest of Houston to Chappell Hill, for the town’s bluebonnet festival. We saw several fields of bluebonnets, but it’s a bit difficult to stop and get pictures, especially with Ad in the driver’s seat zipping along. There was no entrance free for the festival (which was great! The l...
