It seemed much maltier and younger than I remembered without as much of the wonderful mouth-feel or apple notes. The flagship 12-year-old expression was a C grade mediocrity: an Islay whisky without peat, mouth-feel, or much character. Sunday, April 1, 2012. Review: Glen Moray 12. Malts and surprisingly decent. Glen Moray is an old distillery, founded in 1897 in Elgin, Speyside, on the site of a former brewery. Owned for a period by Glenmorangie, the distillery used to feature malts finished in white wine casks, Chardonnay. Though sadly, since the company was sold, they seem to have discontinued the practice, which is a shame, since this malt would play very well with a dry white wine. Of Tomatin 12, this looked like a good try when I saw it on sale last summer in the New Hampshire liquor store. The sherry casks are obvious on the nose.
