Ch 7 - ENCROACHMENTS OF EDWARD I.- WALLACE. In the late thirteenth century Edward I of England had Scotland under his control. However, William Wallace was able to unite Edwards opponents and defeat the English in famous battles at both Lanark and Stirling Bridge. These victories led to Wallace becoming one of Scotland's most loved folk heroes. However, like many warriors from that time, little is truly known about Wallace's background and it's often difficult to tell between fiction and fact.
