John Scott: Biography
http://www.johnscott.net.nz/pages/biography.html
Our Lady of Lourdes. St Joseph the Worker. John Scott 1924 - 1992. Scott, John Colin 1924 - 1992. I remember John Scott sitting on the patio at my parents old house (he seemed reluctant to come inside) talking about aesthetics. It was the first time I had heard the word. He called the toilet, the bog (I remember because I was twelve at the time). He sketched out his ideas on the back of envelopes and scraps of paper (we still have them). John Colin Scott was born at Haumoana, Hawkes Bay, on 9 June, 1924...

John Scott: Waitangi Visitor Centre
http://www.johnscott.net.nz/pages/waitangi_visitor_centre.html
Our Lady of Lourdes. St Joseph the Worker. Waitangi National Trust Visitor Centre, 1982. Waitangi is thought of in New Zealand as the birthplace of the nation so it is appropriate that a Maori architect designed the visitor centre for the Waitangi National Trust and the entrance to the trust's 500 hectare estate which includes the Hobson Memorial, Treaty House and Te Whare Runanga. This building makes good use aluminium window joinery. Scott was a master of the wooden window and he has integrated the...

John Scott: Our Lady of Lourdes
http://www.johnscott.net.nz/pages/lourdes.html
Our Lady of Lourdes. St Joseph the Worker. Our Lady of Lourdes. Our Lady of Lourdes was modified in the nineties, with a supposedly sympathetic connecting structure on the western side. This has destroyed the geometry and the wholeness of the church and is a crying shame. This building was always meant to stand alone, the symmetry of the church one of its strengths. John Scott: Aniwaniwa Visitor Centre
http://www.johnscott.net.nz/pages/aniwaniwa.html
Our Lady of Lourdes. St Joseph the Worker. Urewera National Park, 1974. Tucked away on the edge of Lake Waikaremoana in the Urewera National Park, the Aniwaniwa Visitor Centre (formally the Urewera National Park Headquarters) is a series of pavilions built on a sloping site in the bush. The centre is both a tree hut and another church. The Park Board commissioned Colin McCahon to paint a mural for the National Park Headquarters in 1975. There was controversy about the wording used on the painting, Mc...

John Scott: St Mary's
http://www.johnscott.net.nz/pages/st_marys.html
Our Lady of Lourdes. St Joseph the Worker. Greenmeadows, Napier, 1975. There are many 1970's New Zealand buildings where excess predominates; porthole windows, sharp-peaked roofs, free-form concrete. St Mary's avoids the excesses while still being confidently a 1970's building. Curves are rare in Scott's buildings but St Mary's church has strong and dramatic curves. Craig Martin, September, 2003. John Scott: Building Details
http://www.johnscott.net.nz/pages/details.html
Our Lady of Lourdes. St Joseph the Worker. Just as the writers style makes him choose one word over another, the architects style chooses one detail over another. Scott paid attention to details. Because it looks good. We had just been learning about classical geometrical methods for deriving proportions in architecture. Will always remember his (Scotts) reply to my question about what system he used - he just said Nah - I don't bother with any of that stuff - I just do it if it looks right!
