Elliot's Elementary Learnings. 4 months in Zambia, learning the basics of connecting farmers to seeds. Do the transition hustle! There comes a time when you must hand over the torch. EWB has flown in a “Professional Fellow” (PF) for the next 4 months to replace Spencer and I (who are “Junior Fellows” JFs). I should apologize for 6 days of no blog posts — life got in the way of documenting life. So the torch has been passed. Mark has hit the ground running, flame in hand. You can find his blog here. The s...

Elliot's Elementary Learnings. 4 months in Zambia, learning the basics of connecting farmers to seeds. All images are taken from the Agricultural Value Chains (AVC) blog, untappedmarkets.ca. Our strategy has evolved over time. When the AVC staff focused on all steps. In the process of one crop, they discovered that applying best-practices and successes from one crop did not translate to other crops. They found they could not consolidate strategies across crops. A team strategy was difficult to sy...Inste...

Elliot's Elementary Learnings. 4 months in Zambia, learning the basics of connecting farmers to seeds. I’m a volunteer ‘Junior Fellow’ (lovingly referred to as a JF for short) with Engineers Without Borders Canada. My placement abroad will last four short months, but the responsibility necessarily includes commitment from recruitment (December, 2010) to my graduation (May, 2012). Jun 02, 2011. We are proud of you. Love Andrew, Heather and Ben. Jun 03, 2011. No worries about sending the video, if we can e...

Accident | StephanieWithoutBorders

Just another EWB JF in Zambia. July 8, 2011. Coming into a developing country you know that this is the sort of thing happens but it’s hard see a crashed vehicle and wonder when it crashed and if there are still people in it. For the average Zambian it’s easier to get a hearse to the scene of an accident than an ambulance. This entry was posted on Friday, July 8th, 2011 at 7:30 pm and posted in Uncategorized. An Invitation | Elliot's Elementary Learnings

Elliot's Elementary Learnings. 4 months in Zambia, learning the basics of connecting farmers to seeds. 8220;Set your mind to it, and you can accomplish anything,” or so the old adage goes. Motivation can take you anywhere you want. Motivation is proverbial fuel in the tank. It’s a necessary condition for a project of any variety to go well, and it is no less applicable to development projects. I’m told that the agent network is still functioning to this day. But I gather from Mark Ware. EWB pitched the i...

Thoughts from Winter Elliot | Elliot's Elementary Learnings

Elliot's Elementary Learnings. 4 months in Zambia, learning the basics of connecting farmers to seeds. Thoughts from Winter Elliot. I loftily toss a square of chitenge fabric over a round table. A rectangle to fit the circle will do. We’re setting up for a Bake Sale. To fundraise for EWB in an engineering building at UBC. The “work” I do here in Canada is (literally) miles away from my AVC work. Is. The EWB I now acquaint myself with? I occupy a different space and different roles, and my qualities may c...

Elliot's Elementary Learnings. 4 months in Zambia, learning the basics of connecting farmers to seeds. And all those other things. And so, today I write my blog post in Anna-Marie’s flat in Lusaka (Lusaka Province), Zambia. Sadly, it is my last night in Zambia. Tomorrow, all of the Agricultural Value Chains team (AVC) travels for 12 hours to Lilongwe, Malawi. Lilongwe is eerily quiet, so flying from there is a non-issue. My birthday on Monday was super fun! A celebratory final AVC dinner commenced this e...

Life as an ewb jf in zambia. About Raquel in EWB. Monthly Archives: May 2011. Summertime, and the village life ain’t easy…. The last two weeks went by really quickly. So much has happened! I did a two-week village stay, and spent time in two different villages with two different families. It was interesting to begin living without running water, electricity, internet, etc. Both brought their share of learning experiences that will help me a lot during my next three months here in Zambia. It was awesome t...

Affirm My Swagger! | Elliot's Elementary Learnings

Elliot's Elementary Learnings. 4 months in Zambia, learning the basics of connecting farmers to seeds. Joy erupted from this comment–why? If I boiled it down to a sentence, I think it’s because I feel like something has changed in me and I am all too happy to receive confirmation that other people have noticed. I changed! 8212; — — —. It will make her more aware and self-concious of her changes; it may lead to an attempt to rectify the change or amplify it (ingenuously). What is surprisingly the same?
