My Improv Handbook Test Quilt. February 11, 2015. Last spring I signed up to be a test quilter for The. Improv Handbook for Modern Quilters. I was assigned one of the scores in the book, and secret instructions arrived. The score was based on the flying geese block. I made nine small, lovely improv blocks and thought I was almost done. I just needed to frame them. Except that looked quite boring when I laid it out. Maybe jam them together in the middle of a field? Nope I wrote to Sherri:. I started to ge...

K A T H R Y N C L A R K: What I plan to be doing for the next year.

What I plan to be doing for the next year. Lately my work studio has been filled with graphs, maps and molecular structures. Perhaps I'm crazy, but I think I've found a way to connect all of these seemingly disparate subjects into a new series. A work wall in March. They can effectively used to record history and even offer new knowledge to viewers who were previously unaware. These traditional patterns are certainly beautiful but why not attempt a new pattern language for today? To kick off the series, ...

January 6, 2014. Binary Two Color Quilt Exhibit. As soon as I got off work on Friday, my friends were waiting for me out front. I hopped in Kaci’s car and we headed to the Fauntleroy Ferry. My parents departed from Sequim around the same time and we all met up at Island Quilter. On Vashon Island to check out the Seattle Modern Quilt Guild. 8216;s Binary Two Color Quilt Challenge. Upon arrival, I noticed that Carrie’s yellow and gray quilt was one of the two quilts displayed in the front window. One of th...

Hand stitched quilts, sewn in Texas. The Best Strawberry Flax Muffins. We've had a rain spell here in Houston as the summer winds down, and with those dark clouds above, the house is stormy feeling. Makes me want muffins! I love this recipe because you can easily substitute the flax for bran, depending on whatever you have in the pantry. You can also add 1/2 cup of raisins, 1 cup of blueberries or 1 cup of blackberries instead of the strawberries. THE BEST STRAWBERRY FLAX MUFFINS. 1/3 cup vegetable oil.

As I’ve mentioned much lately, more time has been gifted me since May ’14 and filled with loads and loads of new learning experiences. A course in typography and late night experiments in (sometimes obscure) quilting techniques came together in this quilt. And, well, I love text. I especially love the impact of a single word as different viewers engage with it. So what’s a good word that feels good in one’s mouth, floats in the air linquistically through sounds and connotations? 8230;and then Snap! Novem...

January 11, 2014. Back in December 2012, I told four of my closest friends – Arielle, Tsige, Dev, and Aysha – that my holiday gift would be embellishing an article of clothing for each of them. I asked them to give me an article of clothing that fit them well and said they could make requests for how I should embellish it, such as using certain colors, specific fabrics, or particular shapes like hexagons or triangles. I simply followed the shapes on the fabric to add a bit of texture to it. One of the ti...

You May Have Seen My Work . . . Minimalism with Meaning : The Story of Us. Posted by Entropy Always Wins. Last September I led our Bee Sewcial group. My mission was to make two blocks in blacks and whites that said something personal about them. I asked each member to embrace minimalism in the process. I hope that I have done these ladies justice in the making of our collective story. Since it is so hard to read, I have included the quilted words for you below.
