dancing barefoot: March 2006

Tuesday, March 28, 2006. Yes, belly dancing has a stigma. There have been some truly talented dancers who deserve recognition despite the stigma. While we in the scene seek to elevate the artistry, we also, on some level, must admire those who took it, no holds barred, and ran with it. It is, indeed, an art, which takes much time to study and practice, and takes no less devotion than learning how to play a musical instrument. And was on numerous album and magazine covers. Wednesday, November 29, 2006. It’s not that I’m not writing, I’m just not writing the regular stuff of wispy wind and riverwater. Choreography, or dancewrite, a record and means of remembrance, has consumed my hours and thoughts. I don’t know if you would understand it but when it's loose and under construction and open to improvisation it looks like this-. Arms slow lift and fall, pause with both up. Rock back step, spin, shoulder shimmy. Cross push maya to Lt,. Triplet around in figure 8.

Monday, April 24, 2006. Fluidity of motion or symbol of cultural oppression. I'll dance with veils if a song I love seems suitable. I often use veils if I'm unsure of the audience's ability or comfort level of staying focused on my body for the entire time I dance. The beautiful silk offers a different focal point, a bigger more dramatic dynamic, but also poses a double entendre. With this in mind I'll pretend I have wings. Posted by sahalie at 3:39 PM. Monday, August 07, 2006. At the Oregon Country Fair I had the amazing good fortune to dance with this ferocious serpentine she. The Fair itself was an interesting experience, curious as always, different to be on stage. I loved the crowd and they loved me. No I don't have any photos today. In less than a month this gorgeous creature is returning to teach a workshop, oh me oh my oh, and she'll be staying with my Shellybelly. Delight. Posted by sahalie at 3:11 PM. Wednesday, May 17, 2006. The dance studio where I've been teaching for a full year is moving out of town, so I'm searching for a new space that can accomodate my ever-growing class. It's not easy finding dance studio space; many places don't rent their studios, and too many are condescending or assume much when I say I'm a Middle Eastern Dance instructor. Even if the owners of the studio have no comment on the style of dance, they are, for the most part, pains in the ass. She said to check back with her,...

Friday, November 18, 2005. Ladies, walk like you are moving through waist-deep water, through wet sand, walk like you are Aphrodite with pearls in her hair and eyes that can see into the hearts of others and love them still. Walk strong, like the woman of the mountain with her silver hunting hounds at her heels, balanced and poised and lifted and the energy flows into you from the ground. Posted by sahalie at 3:04 PM. Monday, October 23, 2006. This picture was of a handful in which my expression didn't say, "Um, why am I here and what am I wearing? The other ladies look fabulous! We packed the place for our show on Saturday night, and we all danced very well, hooray! I love dancing with these girlies, we have fun. You should hear the conversations in the green room. No, on second thought, you shouldn't. Posted by sahalie at 12:18 PM. Isnt she loverly. I made this costume for her and n. View my complete profile.

Monday, March 19, 2007. Too busy this weekend, it was go go go girl and I'm exhausted now. My friend had her baby, little itty bitty tiny thing. I took dinner to her, got to hold the wee one, and hurried back home in time for our St Patty's Day dinner party. S bbq'd a big hunk of beef, plus cabbage and taters and carrots and onions, and we had a wonderful night with friends. We gorged ourselves and laughed too much. Posted by sahalie at 11:12 AM.
