Good knowledge of benthic algal taxonomy is not only of purely academic interest but is also vital e.g. for all marine monitoring on changes in coastal biodiversity. In April 2005 a group of marine botanists connected to the University of Bergen started the Bergen Seaweed Group, and in 2009 it was extended to a national network of phycologists.
