I woke up around half 6 and was surprised on 2 accounts, one it wasn't windy and 2 it wasn't raining! Unfortunately it wasn't to last. As I was the only one at the picnic spot I got ready relatively quickly and so at 20 past 7 I was ready to take a few photos. Picnic spot where I wild camped. A bit of Monadhliath | Whiteburn's Wanderings
https://whiteburnswanderings.wordpress.com/2015/04/22/a-bit-of-monadhliath
One man's wanderings backpacking around Scotland plus the odd digression. A bit of Monadhliath. I’d been planning a few trips into the Monadhliath before the forthcoming wind farms completely change the place (i.e trash) but my knee injury put me out of action for a couple of months earlier in the year some what delaying things. Despite the forecasted long spell of good weather various commitments got in the way of a longer trip but a few days wandering is always welcome. 23km, 580m ascent. I passed this...

Rum | Whiteburn's Wanderings
https://whiteburnswanderings.wordpress.com/2015/07/02/rum
One man's wanderings backpacking around Scotland plus the odd digression. I was struggling, the 750m climb up to Sgurr nan Gillean first thing on a morning, well 9am, with a stinking hangover isn’t to be recommended. A buddy and I had taken his boat across to Dibidil Bothy on Rum the night before with the target of completing the Cuillin Ridge. Having access to a boat did eliminate the long and boggy approach to the bothy and make it easy to take in a few logs and an oversupply of alcohol. The route over...

A little bit about not a lot
http://www.alittlebitaboutnotalot.co.uk/2014/11/synthetic-insulated-jacket-jack.html
A Little Bit About Not A Lot: Synthetic Insulated Jacket: Jack Wolfskin Thermosphere. Friday, 7 November 2014. Synthetic Insulated Jacket: Jack Wolfskin Thermosphere. At a time where I thought I had my gear pretty much sorted and I’d come to terms with my view on down versus synthetic, I was contacted by OutdoorWorldDirect. To see if I wanted to test the Thermosphere Jacket by Jack Wolfskin. At the time I had my doubts as to how and where this would have relevance to my kit. Without even looking for the ...

Trouble with the Starlyte | Whiteburn's Wanderings
https://whiteburnswanderings.wordpress.com/2015/07/02/trouble-with-the-starlyte
One man's wanderings backpacking around Scotland plus the odd digression. Trouble with the Starlyte. Recently I experienced a couple of issues with my Zelph Starlyte. Firstly when hot flame would appear from around the edge of the reduction ring (Caldera cone version) leading to an output higher then nominal and possibly a loss in efficiency. More disconcerting was that on occasions flame would appear around the edge of the metal top which could lead to a fire if the stove was on grass. July 3, 2015.

Easter Bunnies | Whiteburn's Wanderings
https://whiteburnswanderings.wordpress.com/2015/04/10/easter-bunnies
One man's wanderings backpacking around Scotland plus the odd digression. I missed the good weather over the Easter weekend thanks to trying to shrug off a dose of the dreaded ‘man flu’ but fortunately the spell of good weather seemed to be unusually, for Easter in Scotland, to be extending into the week ahead so it was off to the ‘gorms with a view to wandering some unfamiliar territory and visit some ‘old friends’. I’d travelled 12km , a bit further than planned but it would serve to shorten tomorrows ...

Air-mat inflator | Whiteburn's Wanderings
https://whiteburnswanderings.wordpress.com/2015/02/17/air-mat-inflator
One man's wanderings backpacking around Scotland plus the odd digression. With the purchase of an Exped Symat 7UL. 2 3 years ago I started to look for a simple inflation mechanism; as Exped state. To prevent the accumulation of humidity from your breath in the mat, we recommend the use of the optional lightweight Mini Pump, Pillow Pump, Schnozzel Pumpbag or the Schnozzel…. I persevered for while with a simple plastic bag with a piece of PVC pipe taped into the corner, it worked but it wasn’t ideal. In fa...

Lynsey's Backpacking Blog: April 2012

Saturday, 28 April 2012. Lakes backpack - day 1 Penrith to Small Water. Saturday 28th April 2012. 259km 1,110m of ascent. As my final training for the challenge I decide to backpack from Penrith to Windermere via High Street. Id previously done the reverse of this route in 2009 with Alistair and thought it would be good challenge preparation. I set off on the early train from Stockport and arrived at Penrith at 9:30. After walking to the outside of Penrith I followed the path through fields to Sockbridge.
