The Ocotillo is such an interesting plant often hidden away in slopes, mesas and washes that are open and rocky with well drained soil. They are a large scrub with long cane-like unbranched spiny stems that grow from a short trunk. After rain, 2 inch green leaves appear as in these pictures. Beautiful red flowers appear from the end of the stems from March through June. The Ocotillo belong to the. Genus of which there are 11 species of the. Is a close relative occurring in Baja. Fouquieria splendens.

On December 29th and 30th 2004 a winter storm that drenched California moved into Arizona dropping sheets of rain over the state, sending a wall of water into Oak Creek and forcing hundreds to evacuate. The adjoining picture of Myst shows a modern day fancy Sedona trail marking cairn. The two pictures below were taken after 2 days of heavy rain (March 1-2, 2015). These pictures show why Buddha Beach is constantly changing as the creek washed the cairns away. Time to rebuild.
