Necessity Is The Mother of Badassity
http://www.mrmoneymustache.com/2014/07/07/necessity-is-the-mother-of-badassity
Jul 7, 2014. Necessity Is The Mother of Badassity. By this point in our conversation, it should be pretty obvious that Badassity is a trait to be treasured and cultivated. Although it is only a fabricated word, the underlying meaning of bold determination and persistence in the face of difficulty is one of the most real and useful tools in the mixed bag of attributes they hand you when you sign up to be a Human being. Living your life with a properly Badass attitude makes all the difference in the world.

Distracts Others: Lithium Supplementation
http://blog.brandoncurtis.com/2014/09/lithium-supplementation.html
An interesting opinion piece appeared in the New York Times today, suggesting that we supplement the drinking water supply with small doses of lithium. To reduce the prevalence of mental health issues. My brain immediately associates lithium with lobotomies, straight jackets, and insane asylums. Upon further research, these associations aren't fair: lithium was first experimented with in the straight-jacket-and-insane-asylum late 1800's, but in the 1950's it was rediscovered. Properties of low-dose lithi...

Distracts Others: It's Not Pi Day
http://blog.brandoncurtis.com/2015/03/its-not-pi-day.html
It's Not Pi Day. Americans have declared this to be a 'Super Pi Day'. Not in my date system! Is a formal standard for the only sane way to write dates and times. Right now, it's 2015-03-14T11:37:01. The ordinal date is 2015-073. This week is 2015-W11. They're general to specific, which just makes sense. UPDATE: Neil deGrasse Tyson agrees:. When Is Pi Day? Fortunately, a Python list comprehension will tell us when the REAL Super Pi Day occurs. P = list(str(N(pi,digits=100)/10) [2:]. Year 314, June 08), bu...

Distracts Others: Music

Goodbye Grooveshark, hello Spotify! Some months, I make a playlist to keep track of the new and interesting things I'm listening to. Sometimes I spend enough time on it to make something coherent; other times it's all over the place. Most of it started in Grooveshark, and I'm still copying things over. Google Drive App for Linux (and Mac). I hate desktop-cloud synchronization applications. Googles Drive Sync application is only available for Mac and Windows. I dont care. I have about two terabytes of files in cloud storage. I have several different machines with very different purposes—desktops, laptops, servers, mobile devices—and I only want to store files locally if Im actually going to use them for something. I need a command line tool. Google, through unofficial channels, has delivered. Don't b...

Distracts Others: February 2015

Upgrading RAM in a MacBook. Surprisingly, upgrading the RAM in MacBook Pro. Is as painless as upgrading the RAM in pretty much anything else. No trip to ifixit. No heating/hammering/drilling/exposure to gamma radiation, and no special tools required (except a very small screwdriver). If your older model is a bit sluggish and youre still rocking 4GB (2x2GB), consider dropping $60 to upgrade to 8GB. To look up your specific model for the real, experimentally-determined capacity.
