Tiger sharks are named for the dark, vertical stripes found mainly on juveniles. As these sharks mature, the lines begin to fade and almost disappear. They can be recognised by its blunt head, serrated cocks-comb-shaped teeth and its colouration. Tiger sharks are common in tropical and sub-tropical waters throughout the world. Large specimens can grow to as much as 20 to 25 feet (6 to 7.5 meters) in length and weigh more than 1,900 pounds (900 kilograms).

Satellite tracking technology to monitor the movements of sharks has only been used since the 1990s. Sharks will be humanely captured and fitted with satellite tracking tags which transmit stored GPS data to the ARGOS satellite system. The satellite tags that will be used in the research cost between $1800 and $3500 US each but may be re-used once their attachment corrodes and the tag floats to the surface, or an animal is recaptured, depending on the type of tag used.
