A Flagon of Ale: February 2012
http://flagonofale.blogspot.com/2012_02_01_archive.html
A Flagon of Ale. Beer drinking and brewing from the Twin Cities. Tuesday, February 7, 2012. This past weekend was Winterfest. The sister festival to fall's Autumn Brew Review. Where ABR is generally packed and outdoors, Winterfest is a bit more austere, hosted in the beautiful Minnesota History Center, and limited to 700 tickets. But it seems be generating a lot of interest and excitement and I haven't heard much backlash. Perhaps some will succumb to market forces etc, but so far, it seems, so good.

The beer brewed for the International Homebrew Project. Was voted on, brewed, bottled and now it has also been drunk. I can say it was one of the most interesting recipes I have ever brewed. My version. 25 lbs Warminster Maris Otter 51%. 0375 lbs Simpson's Dark Crystal 8%. 05 lbs Amber malt 10%. 0375 lbs Brown malt 8%. Just anot...

A Flagon of Ale: August 2011
http://flagonofale.blogspot.com/2011_08_01_archive.html
A Flagon of Ale. Beer drinking and brewing from the Twin Cities. Monday, August 15, 2011. A request to bars. Please, can we start serving beer in the proper glassware? I think we've outgrown the straight-sided shaker pint glass. It's fine sometimes, but if we're going to take the time to serve beer from 3 different continents (and likely at $6 a pint) it's not too much to ask to have them served in different glasses is it? Wednesday, August 10, 2011. Brew City, USA. Either way, I'll surely be back to che...

Session Beer Brewing: August 2013
http://sessionbeerbrewing.blogspot.com/2013_08_01_archive.html
Tuesday, August 13, 2013. SPLIT BATCH - SAISON and ENGLISH IPA. I've been experimenting a lot recently with split batches. The goal is to make 10 gallons of a single wort, then split it into two 5 gallon carboys to ferment seperately for two different beers. Once the Wort is finished there's a couple options you can have to create two different beers. Saison (6 Gallons, 80% Eff, Tinseth). 6 lbs - German Pilz (Weyerman). 15lb - Domestic 2-Row (Rahr). 1 lbs - Wheat (Marminster Floor Malted). Look - Light y...

Belgian Mild

December 30, 2009. I love beer, but getting drunk can sometimes lead to less than stellar situations. Believe me, a nice buzz is rather pleasant, but getting snoozy, surly, or immensely lazy because you’ve consumed too much can be a downer. Not to mention, higher alcohol beer has considerably more calories – problematic for any of us seeking to shed a few pounds. US 2-Row Malt (6#, 65%). German Dark Munich Malt (1#, 11%). Belgian Special B (12oz, 8%). US Aromatic Malt (8oz, 5%). 1039, assuming 70% effici...

Talking, theorizing, and plotting about beer. Wednesday, April 17, 2013. Bridgeport Stumptown Tart 2013. This year's Stumptown Tart is being released. Tomorrow (Thursday, April 18, 2013) at the Bridgeport Brewpub, 5:30-8:30 PM. This year's brew highlights blueberries for the first time in the 6-year run of the series, but also has raspberries and blackberries. All told, there are 15 pounds of fruit per barrel; the fruit was the most expensive ingredient in the brew - 150% of the cost of the malt. Its str...

Why The PLCB Should Be Abolished: Reason #6: the Pennsylvania Legislature
http://noplcb.blogspot.com/2008/06/reason-6-pennsylvania-legislature.html
Why The PLCB Should Be Abolished. Reasons why the Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board should be abolished, and The Almighty Liquor Code completely overhauled and rewritten, to reflect over 80 years of change since Repeal. Thursday, June 5, 2008. Reason #6: the Pennsylvania Legislature. In its overwrought complexity; and yes, they are hampered by their duality of mission. And whose fault is that? In which politicians who are aligned with either the beer distributors. Or the New Drys say they are contemplati...
