The shape of the Severn Estuary is like funnel as the tide travels into an increasingly narrow channel, thus forming a large wave. The Severn's course takes it past Avonmouth where it is almost five miles wide, then past Beachley and Aust, then onto Lydney and Sharpness where it is one mile wide. Very soon the river has narrowed to a width of a few hundred yards. By the time the river reaches Minsterworth it is less than a hundred yards across, remaining this width all the way to Gloucester.

The Voyages of the Severn Swan. Friday, 22 August 2014. For once everything went according to plan. Maureen Shaw kindly delivered Peter back to us at Padstow and we left at 1330 on Tuesday 22 July. Unfortunately we left the harbour just at the time that a small RNLI craft and two other yachts were entering, although we couldn’t see them until we rounded the harbour wall. Fortunately a helpful bystander kept us informed. Otherwise it could have been a very short trip. C’est la vie……. Monday, 21 July 2014.
