Updated: November 13, 2002. Indeed, nearly all the place names in both islands are Norwegian rather than Scottish. The Gaelic language never came into common use on these islands. There still is a strong connection to Norway. Lerwick, the capital of Shetland, is closer to Bergen, Norway than it is to Edinburgh.
