Quiet change | Shady Grove Farm
https://shadygrovefarm.wordpress.com/2012/11/08/quiet-change
Very Small Farm, with Big Ideas. November 8, 2012 in A Present from God. Readers, just make allowance: Fall garden-keeping is undramatic, and on the drab side, image-wise. On the other hand, it is restful: sometimes the plants seem as ready for dormancy as we are. On the other hand, there is always beauty for those who look. Thank you for seeing! Grateful for the light: looks like a work day! Greenhouse sadly neglected, including this drought-damaged Rosemary. Bag Balm ointment for chapped udders. Notify...

Very Small Farm, with Big Ideas. January 25, 2013 in Seasonal Reflections. Tags: no more September breeding. Gloves (2 layers). Krocs. Barn coat. Hood, hat. Cowl. Hoodie. Totally dorky snowpants. Sweatshirt. Yes, I’m back after the third barn trip of the day. We’re warm-blooded crustaceans out here. Cold is a predator, and overlapping garments are armor. Once encased, I can face anything. Now I’m molting. What could I have done? This Winter began with deceptive, lulling warmth and sunlight. Every year, a...

Very Small Farm, with Big Ideas. October 7, 2012 in A Present from God. Monarch caterpillar, hanging from a stout chicory stem, prepares to become a pupa. Later it relaxes to a J-shape. I don’t check till 6pm: here’s the safely encased new pupa. Pupation should take 9-14 days: it’s Day 11, and I worry…. 11 more days pass. I’ve given up hope. Then, morning, Day 23…. Slowly the soft new wings fan open and shut. The next best thing to seeing emergence: a strong new butterfly! Fragile symbol of new life.

Shady Grove Farm & Custom Sawmilling
Welcome to Shady Grove. It is our goal. To raise healthy meat products in a manner that is safe to both the consumer and the environment. All of our animals are moved to fresh pasture twice a day in a humane and stress-free way. This allows the animals a fresh salad bar and moves them away from their own parasite producing manure, which is what ruminating herds do in nature. We try to mimic nature as much as possible and work with it, not against it. Where you can see what we are up to and more.
