shallwehike – shall we hike?

Unexpected Hikes in Zermatt. Ski holidays are always one of my favourite parts of the year: I love spending a week charging all over the slopes, refuelling on frites and steaming hot chocolate in cosy wooden chalets, and feeling my body revive in the fresh mountain air and sun! Lake District charity hike – shall we hike?
https://shallwehike.wordpress.com/2015/05/23/lake-district-charity-hike
Lake District charity hike. Starting to ascend…. Total ascent: over 5000 ft. It was a much steeper climb as we neared the the summit, and we were walking against the wind, but fairly soon views of Thirlmere appeared on one side and on the other we could see Striding Edge. View of Striding Edge from above. The winds were so strong we didn’t dare to get too near the edge, so were glad we hadn’t taken that route! Summit of High Raise. Views as we descended from High Raise. A new milestone: it was the longes...
Mount Rudnica hike, Slovenia – shall we hike?
https://shallwehike.wordpress.com/2015/06/25/mount-rudnica-hike-slovenia
Mount Rudnica hike, Slovenia. Wild flowers on the ascent. Time: 3.5 – 4 hours (door to door). The climb was relatively quick – it took me about 1 hours to reach the summit. For most of the way there was a fairly clear path leading up, with thick woods on either side of it. Being surrounded by trees did make certain stretches of the walk rather dark, and I admittedly felt spooked quite a few times, just from hearing a bird move in the trees or a branch creaking! The initial helpful sign. By this time the ...
This is why I hike – shall we hike?
https://shallwehike.wordpress.com/2015/05/14/this-is-why-i-hike
This is why I hike. A colleague of mine reacted with genuine surprise recently when I told him that hiking is one of my favourite things to do. He looked completely taken-aback and asked,. That’s very niche, isn’t it? You know, like stamp-collecting. Apart from feeling a little, ahem, concerned about how I might have inadvertently pigeonholed myself (! Perhaps I’m biased. Having been raised on summer walking trips to the Lakes and been hauled up fells in a backpack (by my long-suffering Dad! Work for it,...

Timing – radical rumblings
https://radicalrumblings.wordpress.com/2015/08/07/timing
August 7, 2015. August 7, 2015. Last night I glanced out of the window to watch two wood pigeons perched close together on an rooftop, billing and cooing and exchanging what looked like kisses. The clouds above and beyond them were infused with a golden tinge from the setting sun. It looked like it would be the perfect shot as I rushed upstairs to get my camera. No outside with camera poised I looked up at where the pigeons were and there they were, gone. The birds had flown. There’s always tomorrow.

Red Earth: Cambodia Part Two →. Red Earth: Cambodia Part One. February 16, 2015. Some time later the plane descends, then I find myself on red earth. I started in Siem Reap. Routeburn Classic | Everyday Adventures
https://everydayadventures365.com/2015/05/24/routeburn-classic
May 24, 2015. Early this year I reported that I had entered the Routeburn Classic. 8211; a 32km trail run over one of New Zealand’s Great Walks. Well unfortunately from about the time I entered training has been constantly interrupted including by pneumonia in January, a solid ankle sprain about four weeks (okay, I admit trying to run down a bush track stair case in the dark after work was not a good approach to making up for lost time) and a fairly relentless start to the year workwise. At the airport i...

Growing through life experience. A Mexican stand off with Texas Bison. A Mexican stand off with Texas Bison. A snake in the tent, a random blizzard, or attracting the undesired attention of a large predatory cat, and yes all of this has happened to me. By its nature Adventure. Requires random variables which surprise and at times frighten us. I am a meticulous planner, an obsessive details driven, often over-prepared person. Yet somehow Adventure. Had adventure forgotten we were on holiday? At the trail ...

Newer posts →. Drench, Dry, Repeat. February 8, 2016. Another day, another dousing. What that meant for my lunchtime dash over Red Screes was that it was largely raining up to the highest summits to begin with, with only a smattering of hail and sleet mixed in amongst the rain on the outward leg, a brief lull mid-way round before the onset of more rain, but with snow above 600m on my return leg. A brief window in the weather. Looking across to Dove Crag. Sums it up really! February 6, 2016. For our route...

Biog | climber & runner
https://climberandrunner.wordpress.com/biog
I grew up in the relative flatlands of middle England, in Northamptonshire. A land of arable fields, increasingly sparse hedgerows and little in the way of notable inclines let alone hills. The weather, I now realise, was unbelievably arid and the drive to anywhere worth going to, insanely long. But it was frequent childhood trips to visit family on the edge of Snowdonia that was the catalyst for my life-long love and obsession with mountains. And that obsession has never really gone away. Having graduat...
