Ragged toothed sharks, or "raggies" as they are known, can be seen at popular scuba diving locations such as Aliwal Shoal, an offshore reef near Umkomaas which is about 50 km south of Durban. Although they have a formidable set of spiky teeth, the ragged tooth sharks are harmless and are placid enough to allow scuba divers to dive with and observe these sharks in their natural environment. Ragged toothed sharks (. Are called sand tiger sharks in the USA and grey nurse sharks in Australia. Raggies can be recognised by :. Their two dorsal fins - they are of almost equal size - which is unusual in sharks. The top lobe of their tail is larger than the bottom lobe. The open mouth bearing rows of sharp spikey teeth. Their choice of habitat - reef structures, caves, overhangs, gullies. Raggies are considered globally "vulnerable" as they are not as commonly found as they used to be.

Recent photos - October 2003. Look out for a few tagged animals - like Jessica here. Henry" is a young male, seen on 14 October 2003. He was on the Shoal early last year (18-21 August, then again on 6 September 2002). Now he's back! HookedGill" made an early appearance in 2002 (2 July - 24 August 2002) but arrived late this year (14 October 2003). Vic has a clear notch in his left front (pectoral) fin. He was also on the Shoal last year. He is often seen in the Raggie Cave area.

Please follow these simple guidelines to ensure a pleasant diving experience for you, the raggie and the dive group after you.
