My Shetland Bird List. Saturday, 31 January 2015. BGB - Helping out on the Patch. As part of the RSPB Big Garden Birdwatch, RSPB Shetland decided to host a ID course/hide making at Helendale House, Westerloch on Sunday the 25th. I was asked to help out so I came along at 1035 and a few of the volunteers were already there. Though, due to the weather, it was a poor turnout. After about 30 minutes I went birding to the Loch with Louis, there was a few birds around, 4 Gadwall, a Teal and a Fieldfare. Though...

http://logansnatureblog.blogspot.com/2014_11_01_archive.html
My Shetland Bird List. Sunday, 23 November 2014. Brent Geese at Toab. No. 225. On the 22nd I took the bus down to Toab to see if I could get the Brent Geese that had been there (and at Exnaboe) the past week. Within a few minutes of arriving I located the 3 Brent Geese in the parks near the shop, so easy lifer and Shetland Tick! The 3 "peerie" Brent Geese. Male Goldeneye on Clickimin. The Slavonian Grebe which I first found four winters ago with a second bird and it was a lifer as well. The plan was I'd ...

http://logansnatureblog.blogspot.com/2014_12_01_archive.html
My Shetland Bird List. Wednesday, 31 December 2014. 2014: Its all over! So 2014 its all over! Its been a good year and I'll say that with all of them but everyone is good. My birdwatching has been varying a bit throughout the year with me doing really none in June whatsoever but I've been doing more bird ringing this year with 130 birds done over (roughly) 14 species! Mainly all were young birds and Meadow Pipits but both were great to do! Both got me new birds with 7 in Northumberland and 6 in Tenerife!

Logan's Nature Blog: Journey for a Junco!
http://logansnatureblog.blogspot.com/2015/05/journey-for-junco.html
My Shetland Bird List. Tuesday, 12 May 2015. Journey for a Junco! At 1100hrs on the 11th of May, news broke that would send a majority of the Shetland birding community racing to see it. A DARK-EYED JUNCO. A rare North American bunting with only four previous records and the first since 2003 was found by Donald Robertson in his garden at Toab (not a bad one for the garden list! Well I was playing football during breaktime in Mid Yell and I just stopped there and then, gawking at the text I'd just received.

Logan's Nature Blog: February 2015
http://logansnatureblog.blogspot.com/2015_02_01_archive.html
My Shetland Bird List. Thursday, 12 February 2015. Out Wast and around the Patch. On the 8th I was doing the patch at 0830 before heading out "Wast" to the West Mainland with Dave and Pete Ellis at 1015. I was at Clickimin in no time and I picked up the Moorhen. That Dave had found yesterday before making a bee line for the feeders in Helendale. It was strangely quiet when I arrived and it was a ten minute wait before I heard the familiar call of the Blue Tits. Gliding around, chasing the Hoody's. By 101...

Logan's Nature Blog: The Patch, some Migrants and the Odd bit of Ringing
http://logansnatureblog.blogspot.com/2015/05/the-patch-some-migrants-and-odd-bit-of.html
My Shetland Bird List. Wednesday, 13 May 2015. The Patch, some Migrants and the Odd bit of Ringing. The weekend of the 24th was pretty good in my terms. First of all the 25th started with a bang, two patch ticks of Willow Warbler and Common 'Mealy' Redpoll turned up on Clickimin, in the same tree! So I was delighted about that. Male Gadwall, one of only a pair that are on Clickimin now, first Shetland breeding record? Its a Redpoll anyway. The head colour looks quite subdued but you can still see the red.
