모처럼 집 정리를 하게 되면 라면 상자에 넣어 둔 빛바랜 물건들을 다시금 꺼내볼 일이 있다. 철지난 수첩도 그런 것들 가운데 하나다. 오래된 수첩을 넘기다 보면 요즘은 거의 쓰이지 않는 공간이 하나 눈에 들어온다. 보통 수첩의 가장 뒷쪽 몇 장을 차지하고 있는 전화번호부다. 1990년 대 말부터 휴대폰이 대중화하면서, 사람들은 전화번호를 기억할 일이 점차 줄어들었다. 휴대폰에 연락처를 저장해 두고 기억하기 쉬운 이름으로 검색하는 방식은, 전화번호부를 찾아서 일일이 번호를 누르는 것보다 훨씬 편리했다. 우리는 가까운 사람들부터 휴대폰의 연락처에 저장해두기 시작했고, 20여 년이 지난 지금은 가족의 전화번호도 외우지 못하는 일이 드물지 않게 되었다. 휴대폰이 대중화한 지 몇 년 지나지 않아서, 이번에는 또 다른 새로운 물건이 떠올랐다. 디지털 카메라였다. 휴대폰이 수첩의 전화번호부를 사라지게 한 것 처럼 디지털 카메라는 필름과 종이로 된 사진을 사라지게 했다. 사진도 마찬가지다. 접착식 앨범에 ...

여기 한 남자가 있다. 선천성 심장병을 갖고 태어났다. 학창시절 심장수술을 받았다. 세번 받았다. 가슴에 인공 판막을 심었다. 종종 숨이 가쁘고 가슴이 답답했다. 살고 싶었다. 왼쪽 가슴에 손을 얹고 심장이 뛰고 있나 확인했다. 아직 뛰고 있었다. 살아있음에 감사했다. 자신을 살려준 의사들이 고마웠다. 또 여기 한 남자가 있다. 꿈이 있었다. 사람을 살리는 삶을 살고 싶었다. 세상에 보탬이 되는 길이라 믿었다. 의과대학에 진학했다. 의사가 되었다. 진료실을 벗어날 수 없는 현실을 마주했다. 돌파하기로 했다. 시간과 공간을 넘어서고 싶었다. 회사를 세웠다.
