Paul, Heather, Coal, and Teal. Early June 2011: YKD Brant Imagery Survey, Grandpa Ron, etc. Early June is a busy time for me with the Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta brant colony imagery survey. To facilitate the unlikely combination of baby (breast-feeding) and field work, I had a cadre of helpers in the field and on the homefront. (Thanks GayLee and Mike Anthony, Grandpa Ron "the Manny", Ron and Jan Tharldson, and papa Paul). Out with the old and in with the new. The brant imagery survey. We renamed the Husky "S...

Bloggin' in tha 'Banks. Monday, January 23, 2006. In late July of 2005, we ventured to the Anderson Bluegrass festival in interior Alaska, where a few things became immediately apparent. First, Neville has some unique skills, like being able to hypnotize unsuspecting drifters under the guise of "peace.". While many there thought that Neville was performing his rendition of "I'm a little teapot.", he insists that he was simply deflecting attention from himself. Our good friend Lee. 5 being nonplussed at (...

Bloggin' in tha 'Banks. Friday, December 30, 2005. That is, in Fairbanks). Here's a quick summary of the latest from the 'banks:. Story # 1) Air quality in the North Star borough bottomed out on Wednesday, leading to the release of health warning by the local authorities. The cause: a complex interaction between the dreaded Fairbanks temperature inversion and high fuel costs (which has led more locals to burn wood which in turn, has led to more particulates in the air). I've learned that people in the Pacific Northwest are really extreme. Be really cautious when you agree to do recreational activities with people you meet here. The day started perfectly. Blue skies, fresh snow, and warm sun on our faces. Photo courtesy of Ian. The views were spectacular the entire way up. As the morning progressed, the hike became steeper. I became more tired, and had to take lots of breaks. Esther and Logan are trekking champs. The wind was annoying, but created a beautiful scape.
