Nestlé Avenue Factory - Entoptika Photography

The Nestlé factory in Hayes, where they made Nescafé for over 80 years, now stands dormant. The company moved manufacturing to Tutbury in Derbyshire in 2012, leaving the site with a skeleton crew of around 100, until it was eventually sold to a property developer in January 2015. With the Art Deco building and historical significance in the area, the site is quite a local landmark, but now all that could be under threat as the property developers move into change another part of London’s history. I ended...

Thames Barrier - Entoptika Photography
http://entoptika.co.uk/thames-barrier-20150409
The day started out really smoggy. Warnings were in force in London as saharan dust got mixed up with pollution and smothered London in a haze. Being a photographer got me thinking about what that would all do to the sun when it set, so I took a chance on it being good and headed out after dinner. I met them again this evening, but of course all the photos are for personal use and no, I’m not making a film, so no problems there. I’m starting to get used to it. Hiroshima - Entoptika Photography

70 years ago, at 8:15am (Japan Time) on 6 August 1945, the USA dropped an atomic bomb over Hiroshima in Japan. ‘Little Boy’ contained about 64kg of uranium-235 and took about 44 seconds to drop to 580m above the city, where it detonated. The USA estimated that 69,000 people, mostly civilians, were killed. 60% died from burns. If we were attacked, our option would consist of launching a tit-for-tat counter-strike that would kill and injure thousands of innocent people. What would be the point?

Windy Southbank - Entoptika Photography
http://entoptika.co.uk/southbank-20150331
As soon as I arrived on the Southbank I could feel the wind, but decided to ‘give it a go’ after travelling in just before sunset. There were plenty of clouds, but I had been hoping something might break before the sun disappeared and headed to the bank opposite the Houses of Parliament, where I found a few other photographer lurking with tripods. I wasn’t there for too long before the security guard I’d noticed going up the step ahead of me came round the corner and said hello. “He...8221; I said to him...

Westminster Sunset - Entoptika Photography
http://entoptika.co.uk/westminster-20150410
It was all a bit of a rush, so I didn’t see any red sun setting, but did manage to get set up in time to slap the 10-stop neutral density filter on for the first time in fading light and see if I could slow things down a bit more before it got dark. The filter worked well and I’ll certainly be checking whether the lens cap is on a bit more in future! Hope you enjoy. Comments welcome. Leave a Reply Cancel reply. How to make a 'Mini-Planet' - Entoptika Photography
http://entoptika.co.uk/mini-planet-tutorial
How to make a ‘Mini-Planet’. Many a time on a market stall, I’m asked about the ‘mini-planets’ on display and find myself explaining the process I use. I’m going to use the example of my mini-planet of the Hilly Fields Stone Circle (pictured above), a modern creation installed in 2000. I chose to stand in the middle of the circle, on the stone slab, to create a ring of the stones around the edge of the final image. Anyway. Here are the images:. Note that I haven’t bothered to crop the bottom and to...

About - Entoptika Photography
http://entoptika.co.uk/about
My name is James and I’m a freelance photographer based in south-east London, where I live with my wife and young son. Until 2013, I was a biologist, working in scientific research. After a few years of redundancy threats in the post credit-crunch years culminating in unemployment a month after the birth of my son, I finally found the time and motivation to try and ‘do something with my photography’, as friends and family had suggested on more than one occasion.
