Slimtarra is the beautiful wallpaper project of Extrapool; many artists have created beautiful designs. Slimtarra is printed in stencilworkspace Knust. The technique has an influence on the pattern and on the end result. It can only be printed on A3 size and not, as usual, on a roll. That has a big advantage: by tilting the sheet, you can play with the pattern. The subtle variations in the designs and ways of decorating also add more charm to your wall. Occasionally Knust gives workshops in the stencilprinting technique, by making your own zine, poster, Print Gocco card, or one magazine together. Most of these workshops take place on art book fairs and festivals inside and outside the Netherlands. But some also take place during events in Extrapool. Knust is the name of the graphic department of artist run organization Extrapool based in Nijmegen, the Netherlands. Knust represents a print workspace and a bookbinding workspace, and is highly specialized in the stencilprinting technique, also known as Risograph or mimeograph printing. The print workspace is founded by and for artists and offers the possibility to let your own work be stencilprinted in a reasonable edition for a reasonable price. You can also work at the print workspace on a DIY base.

The printing technique can be compared with the silkscreen printing technique. In both techniques ink is pressed through a screen or a stencil. Silkscreen printing is however a manual process, with manual made ink which dries fast. Where as stencilprinting is a more mechanical process with semi-transparent non-drying inks. Knust makes use of more than five different Riso and Ricoh Priport digital duplicators, a UV-seriprinter and more than 50 different colour drums to choose from. Additionally Knust also has old Roneo, Rex Rotary and Gestetner stencil machines and stencil cutters. These are really rough and more time consuming machines, and only used for very special projects and workshops. And there are 3 Print Gocco’s (A6 size) and a smaller than A6 size handstamp from the fifties for stencils. A2 – Size Does Matter.

Work Holiday | Knust Press

Work Holiday refers to a series of special book residency projects which take place in Knust/Extrapool. Within Work Holiday an artist can publish a concept of a book together with Knust/Extrapool in a residency of 7 days. You can have printed matter stencilprinted varying from; books, (maga)zines, posters, flyers, wallpapers, cd/vinyl covers and sleeves, postcards, business cards, birth announcements, brochures, paper bags, envelopes and stickers. Knust works with two different types of machines, Riso and Ricoh, having each a slightly different set of colours and slightly different possibilities in printing and paper size. 80 to 240 grams paper. The printing size can be extended to 300 x 475 mm (A3 long=printed twice).
