A log of my meanderings by the shore, and occasional journeys to other aquatic locales. Sunday, January 1, 2017. Extreme Minus Tide in Mission Bay, San Diego. In mid-December we had some extremely low tides in San Diego. December 13th brought an approximately minus 1.7 foot tide to Mission Bay! I explored the western side of Vacation Isle to see what the low tide might reveal. On the exposed rocks. Many of them had layed eggs, as shown below. Found on the sand past the rocks. The coastline is very different in the north as compared to San Diego County! Nice muricids like Nucella lamellosa. Appear, as well as many other colder water-loving species. Some old friends are there also (like Olivella biplicata. We started out on the coast in Humboldt County, exploring Trinidad, Clam Beach and Humboldt Bay.

There's a high concentration of humanity on the shore here, but the ocean still offers up some natural things, as it always does. We visited from July 15 -17. Willets. The small breakwaters harbor many interesting species, much more easily viewed at low tide. These were observed yesterday, during the afternoon. Was a first in my personal observations. It was clearly the find-of-the-day. There are abundant Acanthina lugubris. Here, as at many rocky locations in San Diego County. Were abundant amongst the rocks.
