Pétit Déjournal
http://petitdejournal.blogspot.com/2009/10/as-promised-we-whipped-up-some-stock.html
As promised, we whipped up some stock a couple weeks ago. Big surprise, in order to make chicken stock one actually needs a whole chicken. My PSA for the week: read the entire recipe before you start. We'd already eaten the chicken; we opted for vegetable stock. Adapted from Mark Bittman's Vegetable Stock, and Joy of Cooking's Chicken Stock. 1/3 - 1/2 c. olive oil. 3 large onions, quartered. 5 carrots, quartered. 4 celery stalks, halved. 4 small-medium sized potatoes, washed, quartered. Place the roastin...

I'd like to assure you, though, that while my brain may be hibernating, my kitchen is not. There were some chicken strips:. Peanut butter toast in the pre-dawn snow:. All the unsatisfactory lemon scones which Geo ate most of in one day:. Aliens in both our bread and artichokes on the same day:. There have been a couple batches of beer George brewed with our friend Taft:. We discovered Brussels sprouts when we actually, for real, couldn't find kale in the grocery store:. Via The Wednesday Chef. :.

Pétit Déjournal: August 2009
http://petitdejournal.blogspot.com/2009_08_01_archive.html
I recognized it by the font, the border, the color: blocky. Simple, yellow. Chez. I was hoping for Fruit. Alice Waters and Chez. I gasped, I grabbed, I was victorious. Finding a Chez. Book used is rare find, in my experience. It meant someone had cleaned out their books on food - undoubtedly just collecting dust on their shelves, they probably aren't that into cooking anyway, but Alice Waters looks so good and impresses guests. Chances are this person didn't bring just this single book. Another one from ...

Pétit Déjournal: September 2009
http://petitdejournal.blogspot.com/2009_09_01_archive.html
It's official: summer's over. We close the windows at night, we brush leaves off the windshield, I've lured my sweaters out of hiding, and finished knitting my first scarf of the season. Fall is wafting in and with it notions of soups, breads, and pies. This week a surprisingly all-American menu:. The No-Knead bread recipe comes from Jim Lahey. Sums it, "The loaf is incredible, a fine-bakery quality, European-style boule. For a 4 1/2 lb bird we put a large cast iron skillet in the oven, then preheated it...

Barefoot Mama: July 2008
http://thebarefootmama.blogspot.com/2008_07_01_archive.html
One step at a time. Wednesday, July 30, 2008. Thanks for returning the book. I was surprised to find a rather large sum of money tucked into the book when I picked it up to return it to the shelf. I can't imagine anyone would want to give me a tip (ha, ha), and even if one did so wish, I could not, in good conscience, accept.". I seriously think he thought I was trying to pay him off (though I don't know why. I swear I got a good grade! Sunday, July 27, 2008. What bothers me is the idea of something insi...

Barefoot Mama: August 2008
http://thebarefootmama.blogspot.com/2008_08_01_archive.html
One step at a time. Thursday, August 14, 2008. Sephira's newest favorite thing. These trips are turning into a daily thing and I'm starting to get to know familiar faces. I've also noticed the patterns of shoppers on certain days. Moms on Mondays and Wednesdays. Guys in the evening. especially midweek. Elderly on Thursdays. I wonder if this is intentional. If somehow these populations manage to consort on this. The advantages to this:. 1 exercise in an air conditioned environment. Tuesday, August 12, 2008.

Barefoot Mama: Once upon a time
http://thebarefootmama.blogspot.com/2008/08/once-upon-time.html
One step at a time. Thursday, August 7, 2008. Once upon a time. Did I really once spend hours contemplating the difference a millisecond could make on the lines of someone's face in the shadow of the morning sun? Art school…. it sounds so very… wordly. I looked at the rest of the pictures on the site. The same people still doing the same things. The same couples together. There under a light post in the snow. There at the kitchen table in the morning. There in the backyard together. Once upon a time.
