Beat Back the Tide. Fuji; You Dirty Girl. So there I was, performing my calisthenics at the base of that ominous and sacred mountain when an old Japanese mystic passed me. He was bent a twisted with scoliosis and had to look up sideways out from his hooded shawl to meet my eyes. He said, "You are ascending Fujisan.". I told him he was correct in his assumption. So I've got that goin for me. This will be easy! As the second leg grew steeper and altitude gained we began dipping into the morphine a little.

Beat Back the Tide. Grab the hand held out in front of your face. You're falling fast thru time and space. Movement forward is what we need to do. This stagnant shit is planting too many roots. Roots that grow from society's tree. Fearing the monotony of harmony. Littering the earth without hesitation. Ignoring the fate of future generations. Hoping that there won't be serious repercussions. Ignoring our feelings of solitude and misdirection. Feeling means nothing unless you have someone to feel for.

Beat Back the Tide. There I sat. A cup of black iced on the table, box of newports. I turned the mobile off, as I was in no mood to answer any phone call. I don’t think he had any idea of what really happened right there, I don’t think I did at the time, probably still don’t. It was the essence of human relation displayed, no pretense, no deliberate thought, no pre-meditated dialogue stuffed in an 'its sooooooo good to see you' bouquet, just 2 dudes, with very little in common enjoying some now.

Beat Back the Tide. I noticed the crease between dessert and coffee. She was finishing her tiramisu and a bit of cake fell from the spoon and lodged in an unlikely cavity to the left of her chin. A trick of the light? No, it was real. An inch-deep dent that could have come from one of the cars outside. Hundreds of people came to the bistro every day, and dual states of fullness and flux filled the parking lot with crunches and whispered scrapes. Engine trouble, she said. Posted by Haplo @ 25.9.05. Beat Back the Tide. In the twelfth year of what would be a fourteen year marriage on the morning of a summer day which she had planned to spend at the beach club playing pinochle, drinking chardonnay and lemonade with her friend Cynthia Blom Manuela Eckstein’s husband, Sol, was diagnosed with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis. Of course, he had said, eyes welling, teeth scraping against the receiver of his phone, just promise that you’ll come back to us. Please just promise us that. She knew she needed rest.

Beat Back the Tide. We ran into some trouble that night in Richmond, didn't we? Packed high and tight to the gullivers. My whole life and all my possesions within your steel and rubber. She never called back that night, though, did she? We bummed it all over the goddamn campus that night. Then, at what? I finished that bowl and looked to your compass. Do you remember that? Just go West, man. West with a capital W. Manifest with a capital destiny. Just go west. Posted by Wolfard @ 18.5.06. A jack-in-the-b...

Beat Back the Tide. Trish called Friday, at around 9:00 am, my time. It was 1:15 by the time I woke up. I had to be at work in 15 minutes. There was just no way. I didn’t want to, but I had to call in. I had to pull the Reverse Hero. Dom, it’s Allen, I said into the phone, trying to convey sickness and harrow, but not necessarily that recently awoken vibe. What’s up, Al? Not much. Hey, I don’t think I can make it in today, man. Okay, man. I’ll call you back. My shoulders still hurt. Shoulders? Then back ...
