Sitting Pretty Cane Seating History. History of Cane Furniture. Cane seating is believed to have originated in China and was commonly used in the Far East for centuries before spreading to the west as trade grew with China. The cane material comes form the rattan or cane palm, a type of bamboo vine covered in seriously nasty thorns which today grows in the jungles of Indonesia and Malaysia. The outer, thorny bark is removed to leave the inner bark which is used for the seating material.
