API version 1 just launched bringing you the Simplton worldview
http://blog.simplton.com/api-launch.html
API version 1 just launched. I wanted to get a some of the meat and potatoes actions exposed so importing and collaboration with other systems can be achieved. Moreover, right now I just implemented basic authentication. Plans for OAuth are on my mind but this was quick and running it over SSL should be good enough security for the time being. The API docs are at http:/ simplton.com/api. As always, feedback is welcome. This entry was updated September 20, 2013 by the Mayor.

Simplton founding history bringing you the Simplton worldview
http://blog.simplton.com/simplton-history.html
I believe the initial launch from concept to working application took 3 days. The team liked it and off we went. Shortly after the launch I become keen on making the application as enjoyable to use as possible. I also became interested in more abstract problems facing issue trackers such as: (1) "core" team members using email and instant messaging instead of the issue tracker also called "backsliding". To accomplish this aim of keeping the team off of email the "famed" Simplton ordinances. I am a freela...

Simplton Rails 3 upgrade: From broken to bootable to production. bringing you the Simplton worldview
http://blog.simplton.com/rails-3-upgrade.html
Simplton Rails 3 upgrade: From broken to bootable to production. First thing I did. One thing that annoyed me over the last few weeks was the endless browsing I was doing reading one blog post after the other about the upgrade process. I wanted to get my feet on some solid ground and have a one stop shop for the upgrade. I settled on Jeremy McAnally's. Rails 3 Upgrade Handbook. First thing I did before the first thing. Next, branch it. Next, hook it up. Next, rails upgrade plugin. That will generate your.

Simplton Rails 3.2 and Ruby 1.9.3 upgrade. I am very happy to report that upgrade path to rails 3.2 was. Update: the ActionMailer depreciations kicked in for Rails 3.2 and I was unaware of it. Simplton Ruby 1.9 upgrade: From broken to bootable to production. bringing you the Simplton worldview
http://blog.simplton.com/ruby-1-9-upgrade.html
Simplton Ruby 1.9 upgrade: From broken to bootable to production. Which I did as root. When installing rvm as root it will automatically be a system wide or multi-user installation. I did this on my development and production environments, both Ubuntu. When doing a system wide rvm install you don't need to put anything in the .bashrc file as the rvm function will be set in /etc/profile.d/rvm.sh. 2 Install 1.9.2 and REE 1.8.7. Command does not work in a screen session. Next, I installed ruby 1.9.2. Ruby -...

Overhauling the "move post" feature bringing you the Simplton worldview
http://blog.simplton.com/move-post-overhaul.html
Overhauling the move post feature. The non-core posting problem. In short, they are not as invested as core members and will be less careful. Lastly, all team members will have a tendency to stuff more and more topics into single issue because the new topic will seemingly be closely related but in reality it is better suited to be its own issue. Enhancements in moving posts. Move post(s)" selection in the actions menu. Check the posts you want to move. The importance of moving posts. I am a freelance "au...

There is no "we" in Simplton. It is just me. bringing you the Simplton worldview
http://blog.simplton.com/there-is-no-we-in-simplton.html
There is no we in Simplton. It is just me. Making design decisions is easy, fast, and if need be radical. In the end, Simplton is all about competing with email. To compete with email I feel like I need free reign to solve this problem. Like I need to "throw the book" at this challenge. For example, as you can read more on the philosophy. I know there are exceptions here but isn't that statement generally true? This application has been in production. Questions you might have. Yes, I would like to when I ...

Resolve issue blocking. In a nice way. bringing you the Simplton worldview
http://blog.simplton.com/resolving-issue-blocking.html
Resolve issue blocking. In a nice way. Many times you may find yourself in a situation where a issue is stalled waiting for a answer. The question is usually formed in the issue's last post and goes something like this: "Hey Jim, I am not sure how far to move the left column over. Is it .5 inch or 1 inch? Let's say there is then no response to that question. You then add another post: "Jim, so what is the answer? Do yet another post? So what is the deal with Jim? Bugging Jim, nicely. The Simplton town ga...

How Simplton relates to Rework bringing you the Simplton worldview
http://blog.simplton.com/simplton-and-rework.html
How Simplton relates to Rework. I snagged a copy of Rework. A while ago. It is a good read but I could not help thinking how some of the philosophies in the book relate to the Simplton philosophy. Even with these simple tasks, our estimates are often off by a factor of two or more. If we can't be accurate when estimating a few hours, how can we expect to accurately predict the length of a "six-month project"? Long lists don't get done. There is a good article. In where it makes the statement. And again t...
