Blissfully Discontented: December 2012
http://blissfullydiscontented.blogspot.com/2012_12_01_archive.html
Monday, December 3, 2012. 8220;Dear God…thank you for the food in our bellies, and our warm house to sleep in. And please, God, hold my hand while I sleep and not make me have any nightmares. And please help me to have a good day at school tomorrow. In Jesus name, Amen.”. Every single night these are the words that Ben sends up to God. And for him they are big, big worries. Ben with his little monkey circus of snuggle buddies. I know how frightened he is each night. Adding the weighted blanket. That impr...

Blissfully Discontented: A Lesson in Emotional Masonry
http://blissfullydiscontented.blogspot.com/2013/08/a-lesson-in-emotional-masonry.html
Thursday, August 29, 2013. A Lesson in Emotional Masonry. This morning as the kids were scrambling to get ready for school. Hey kiddo, are you about ready to go? You’re not going to be late for school again today. Oh, and Mom…I just want to let you know so you can stop asking about Eric*. But it’s okay because it was mutual. I mean…it makes sense. Uh…are you okay? Through a text message. I mean…that was crappy and stuff. I saw in her face behind her smile that she was not, in fact, good. But I can’t.

Blissfully Discontented: March 2013
http://blissfullydiscontented.blogspot.com/2013_03_01_archive.html
Friday, March 22, 2013. Sometimes. There IS Crying in Baseball. Welp, we’re at it again…another sports season, another three months of sore ass by cheap camp chair, another round of cool, Saturday morning games with a little Baileys sneaked into my travel mug. No I’m not. This time though I’m not talking football. No…my Ben decided this year he wants to try baseball. We’ve had an interesting go of organized sports with Ben. As a kindergartener, it meant he would be playing no-contact flag football. And as...

Friday, September 27, 2013. Not Your Average 6th Grade Creative Writing. One evening last week my daughter peeked into my bedroom just before bed to share that she's been participating in a creative writing lesson each day and would like to share her latest installment. As parents sometimes do, I agreed with a twinge of regret knowing this story could be quite lengthy and likely a little far-fetched. Hence.creative. My Lib.she takes creativity to a whole new level. Blissfully Discontented: January 2013
http://blissfullydiscontented.blogspot.com/2013_01_01_archive.html
Thursday, January 31, 2013. It occurred to me today that it’s been nearly a year since Ben’s diagnosis. 8230;a year since we first heard “Asperger’s” and “Ben” in the same sentence. A year full of relief and struggle and successes and setbacks…quite a year, indeed. See what I did there? What if I can’t carry on a convo in a group of these parents? What pisses us off about Jenny McCarthy? What is our stance on immunizations? How do we feel about Autism Speaks? Lost look, glancing side to side. As I rolled...

Blissfully Discontented: April 2013
http://blissfullydiscontented.blogspot.com/2013_04_01_archive.html
Monday, April 29, 2013. For two solid weeks I went back and forth…Autism Walk or baseball game? For the second year in a row we had another commitment the same day as our local county Autism Walk. This year the conflict was a little league baseball game. A game in which I knew Ben would shut down by the 3. A game in which Ben would need a firecracker lit beneath his rear to get him moving from outfield to dugout and back. A game in which Ben would walk away feeling like a failure. The whole damn family.

Monday, January 20, 2014. When Alone Becomes Lonely. My boy made the honor roll. Yep…I’m talking about Ben. That kid continues to amaze me every single day. He has succeeded (for the most part) in his general education classroom now for two and a half years. Of course I’m using grades, incremental improvement on IEP goals and his lack of suspension as my measure of success. What’s not to love? He is also continuing to push himself athletically and socially by participating in our youth basketball league.

Thursday, June 20, 2013. Is a parent who pays extremely close attention to a child's or children's experiences and problems, particularly at educational institutions. That’s not me. I mean…not really. Well, not all the time. That is me…word for every mother-lovin’ word. Not so much with the two older kids. I’d say with them I’m a solid “Stage 3-Momma Bear” but I’ve never hit “Stage 4 Chopper” with them. I don’t know that I’ve ever felt as though I’ve had to. I don’t have to interpret for anyone. Or am I ...

Singing In Secret - Small Stories, Memories and Frozen Moments
Do you prefer silence? You must think of me sometimes. I can not believe that I have been erased, wiped clean along with the pain and memories. There must be song fragments that still hold me in their sweet chords, lyrics that take you back to when we were one. Or do you you turn off the radio, preferring silence to those feelings that whirl and whip like wind spun waves. The Years That Have Passed. The Need for Fresh Air. Hysterically, and the only world that existed was their own. She dreams he is ther...
