Six Months in Addis

Six Months in Addis. Thursday, 5 December 2013. Running with the Best. A few weekends ago I did something I wanted to do ever since I arrived in Ethiopia. I took part in the Great Ethiopia Run. In light of the increased security measures the city has been experiencing over the last months there was some trepidation about being in large crowds, but I figured there is no point in living scared. And I am so happy I went. A quick photo op 1km in - everyone was doing this! Thursday, 28 November 2013. Our grou...

Six Months in Addis: July 2013

http://www.sixmonthsinaddis.blogspot.com/2013_07_01_archive.html

Six Months in Addis. Monday, 22 July 2013. Just over a month into my time in Addis and I'm definitely starting to feel settled. Time is no longer absorbed with house hunting and other logistical issues and I'm slowly getting the opportunity to explore this incredible city. All in all, a pretty great weekend. Photo Credit: Michelle Ferng. Photo Credit: Michelle Ferng. Photo Credit: Michelle Ferng. Thursday, 18 July 2013. Today is Nelson Mandela's Birthday. He turns 95 this year, and as a helpful UN em...

Six Months in Addis: IshiBekaCiao

http://www.sixmonthsinaddis.blogspot.com/2013/09/ishibekaciao.html

Six Months in Addis. Wednesday, 18 September 2013. Reason 237 I wish I spoke Amharic: Our house has been without water for two days. But it’s not just us. Much of Addis is also dry because the city has turned the water off for a few days for maintenance work. Apparently, this was announced on local radio and tv so people could prepare . We missed the message – and I feel like we really only have ourselves to blame. Some of my favourite things about Amharic so far…. My name in Amharic is Rahel – and...

Six Months in Addis. Sunday, 27 October 2013. Squeezing It In/Photo Recap. Alongside work, I've also been trying to do and see as much as possible before I leave. I'm feeling grateful I managed to squeeze in as much as I did over the last month. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Squeezing It In/Photo Recap. More than half way. Six Months in Addis: June 2013

http://www.sixmonthsinaddis.blogspot.com/2013_06_01_archive.html

Six Months in Addis. Friday, 28 June 2013. House hunting in Addis is not an easy task. The city's population is rapidly increasing, growing at a rate of almost 4% annually since the mid-00s. Now assumed to be well over four million people, there is simply not enough places to live or enough roads and public transport to travel on. Friday, 21 June 2013. Tell me, what is it you plan to do. With your one wild and precious life". This opportunity marks many firsts. My first time in Ethiopia. My first...And w...

Six Months in Addis: more than half way

http://www.sixmonthsinaddis.blogspot.com/2013/10/more-than-half-way.html

Six Months in Addis. Tuesday, 1 October 2013. More than half way. It's true what they say, the acronyms do start rolling off your tongue. SOP, AWP, DIP, CRGG, EDP, GEF, NIM, NEX and the list goes one. They have all become embedded in my brain and I find myself referring to them in conversation without skipping a beat. The city and I have come to a compromise. I may not always like it but there is much about it I am grateful for and returning from weekends away feels like coming home. More than half way.

Where the Wild Ferng Grows. Finding commonalities across peoples, places, and time. August 10, 2014. When I wrote my last and only post in Liberia, the plan had been to follow with a series of reflections. In any case, last week I made my way from the Southern coast of beaches, old Dutch forts, and coastal flair to the central Hill Country of tea plantations, nature hikes, and misty mountains. Six Months in Guyana

Six Months in Guyana. Wednesday, October 1, 2008. Saturday, September 27, 2008. I wrote this during our first month in Mabaruma. It was a time of great frustration and little sleep. Many things changed for the better since I wrote it. Last night was not an example of Mabaruma Hospital at its finest. Later in bed we heard a little scuffle outside and a knock on our door followed soon after. It was Fred’s sister. Could the Doctor come please? 8220;What about the hospital generator?
