Why we become expats – Skipping Customs
http://skippingcustoms.com/2015/01/27/why-we-become-expats
The best is yet to come. Why we become expats. Encounters with strangers in Shanghai always come with difficult questions. For one, ‘why did you come to China? 8217; is one that has been asked each time I have met someone new and over time, it’s become more and more of a burden to answer it (seriously, being greeted with ‘which school did you go to? 8217; at an alumni mixer last Wednesday was almost a welcome change of pace). I’ve already written about some of my reasons for coming to China. But the main...
My Morning Commute or “Ten Minutes on the Shanghai Subway” – Skipping Customs
http://skippingcustoms.com/2015/02/05/my-morning-commute-or-ten-minutes-on-the-shanghai-subway
The best is yet to come. My Morning Commute or “Ten Minutes on the Shanghai Subway”. That’s the exact length of my work commute. That is, if don’t count stopping at the milk coffee-tea stall along the way). Of those forty-two minutes, less than ten are spent underground, passing two subway stops on Line 11 of the Shanghai Metro from Shaanxi Nan Lu to Jiaotong University (it’s actually closer to seven; I timed it on a particularly boring morning). I woke up at 7am and I still look. well, like. An Ayi whos...
How to drink coffee in China – Skipping Customs
http://skippingcustoms.com/2015/03/04/how-to-drink-coffee-in-china
The best is yet to come. How to drink coffee in China. Like many things in China, the Shanghainese coffee culture is a little. off. Drinking coffee in China is a rather bizarre experience, and I’m not quite sure whether it lags behind or somehow surpasses its US equivalent (probably the former). Below are some of my encounters with coffee in Shanghai. Yep, we’re in China. And only uses organic (bGH-free! Add a pair of black flats, and this would be the perfect ‘basic girl’ photo. Drink a fair bit. In col...
The L-Pocalypse and other (good and bad) impressions of being back in New York – Skipping Customs
http://skippingcustoms.com/2015/05/19/the-l-pocalypse-and-other-good-and-bad-impressions-of-being-back-in-new-york
The best is yet to come. The L-Pocalypse and other (good and bad) impressions of being back in New York. At least it wasn’t the G train? Uber has been such a lifesaver. On the grand scale of things, I really don’t think much has changed since I’ve left the States (Kombucha is still a thing. Everybody, calm down; there’s no need to panic). But the one thing that I would say has actually been a shift is Uber everywhere. Trash cans and paper napkins. Everywhere. Subway rats and the mild smell of pee. Next t...

The L-Pocalypse and other (good and bad) impressions of being back in New York. Good Samaritans and the Burrito Cart. What it’s like to live in Russia. The charm of Moscow in November. Gangs of grannies and my other adventures in the motherland. The overwhelming devastation of ‘getting’ Russia. My struggle with the Russian table.

Pictures of climbing Ulsanbawi 울산바위 (蔚山岩) in Seoraksan. Saturday, January 01, 2011. I thought the climb from Heundeulbawi. To the base of Ulsanbawi. Was hard, but it was nothing compared to actually climbing up Ulsanbawi to get to the very top. Boy, was I wrong! Everyone told me Ulsanbawi would be the most difficult course at Seoraksan National Park. Base of Ulsanbawi Rock. I grew even more relaxed when I saw the red metal stairs. Red metal stairs to Ulsanbawi. That feeling didnt last very long though.

Skipping Dessert | … and taking the stairs
8230; and taking the stairs. What’s this all about? 2015 Weigh-In Number 7 (of 52). Posted by hlward in Uncategorized. Let me say right up front that, no, I do not intend to only post every second Friday. Life just works out that way. I bring good tidings of great joy, however: Today’s number is 278. Which is 11 pounds in 7 weeks. I obviously don’t expect to maintain this sort of result, but I’m darned happy to be ahead of the curve. The second thing is the fact that I. But today we celebrate!
