Anne Notations: January 2005
http://annenotations.blogspot.com/2005_01_01_archive.html
Friday, January 28, 2005. Preparing for a death. Michael's mother is dying of cancer. She is 88 and our children's last grandparent. All of them adore her. Mom has been the sun, the family nucleus around whom her four sons and daughters-in-law and 13 grandchildren have revolved. Not so many weeks ago I was buying our daughter Melinda a beautiful formal for her high school's Winter Ball. Today we shopped for somber clothes and shoes for her to wear to Mom's funeral and wake . soon. This spam's for you.

Anne Notations: February 2005

Monday, February 21, 2005. RIP, gonzo journalist Hunter S. Thompson, who died yesterday by suicide. His writing was not my cup of Wild Turkey, but I suppose it's the end of an era. As for fear: How I gnashed my teeth at having to attend my second Weight Watchers meeting today! How thrilling to see that my eleventh-hour panicky eating this past week resulted in a gain of two pounds. (groan). Melinda (right) with her friend Torey before the dance, at our house. Robyn and Andrés, good to go. I still love to...

Anne Notations: May 2005

Wednesday, May 25, 2005. Looking west across Sakonnet Passage from Little Compton, RI. December 31, 1983. Over the stone wall, into the potato field, toward the line of trees and brush the dogs and I walked. It was cold; the sun was pale and low in the sky. Turning down the truck path toward the water, I noticed something in the clearing to our left: small gray boulders in the frozen ground. I looked again. July 8, 1984. Nature could trap. You could wander among sweet grasses and not think of God....

Anne Notations: October 2005

Thursday, October 27, 2005. My stepdaughter Leslie (above, at right, with Melinda) is expecting her first child - a daughter - in the coming month. Doesn't she look beautiful in that ripe way unique to pregnant women? I am reminded of autumn apples, sweet pears, all the fruity abundance we reap at harvest-time. It is cause for thanksgiving, clearly. Michael and I will be grandparents! I'm ready to be Granny Annie. Posted by Anne D. at 10:39 AM. Down by the Bay. Warwick, RI, United States. A Day Over Fifty.

Wednesday, April 27, 2005. In a galaxy far, far away. Waiting in line to see "Attack of the Clones". Indianapolis. Star Wars Celebration III. Four and a half days of bonding with a group of warm, sassy women from all over the U.S. and Canada. Walking miles in our sneakers and sandals. Standing in lines for hours. Waiting outside under umbrellas at 6 am to hear Hayden Christensen by phone from Italy at noon. One square meal a day, and plenty of bottled water: more than enough! Darth Vader and yours truly.

Sunday, July 31, 2005. A young ox and Kevin, Springfield, Vt. And when they were given the signal, man, did those beasts. With a black ox here. And a white ox there. And spotted ones everywhere. In pastures during our drives, we saw heifers doing the horsefly ballet. Melinda's favorite was this "cow" in downtown Brattleboro. I guess you'd call it a people mooooover. Posted by Anne D. at 11:17 PM. Wednesday, July 20, 2005. Since the 26th of June I have:. Did I say "drinking"? 4 Gone to a family reunion in...

Saturday, September 03, 2005. Mayor Phil Hardberger, San Antonio, Texas. Aaron Brown of CNN was interviewing Mayor Hardberger last night, pushing him a little: How would San Antonio pay for all the generosity he had promised? Where would all those kids fit in the schools? Wouldn't it be a strain on the city and its residents? Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses. ". Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me.". Thank you, Mr. Mayor. Anne Notations: August 2005
http://annenotations.blogspot.com/2005_08_01_archive.html
Saturday, August 27, 2005. Becky, me, and Dagmar in the gazebo. August seems to be a month when I reconnect with old friends. Today, as we have every summer for the past seven years or so, we got together with my sophomore roommate Becky and her husband, William, and their daughter, Kamaria, at the rural eastern Connecticut home of Becky's parents, Cliff and Dagmar. Will cope when that time comes five years from now. Melinda and Michael in the gazebo. Kevin - child of the corn. Sunday, August 21, 2005.
