Follow us on Facebook. The History of Sugar Land (from the Handbook of Texas). In 1892 the town had one physician and a population of 500. From 1906 to 1908 Isaac H. Kempner of Galveston and William T. Eldridge of Eagle Lake acquired the Ellis and Cunningham plantations and the Cunningham Sugar Company, modernized the facilities, and made the community a company town for the Imperial Sugar Company, the Sugarland Industries, and Sugar Land Railroad (Missouri Pacific). Follow us on Facebook. The Sugar Land Heritage Foundation conducts an historic walking tour of Old Sugar Land on the 2nd Saturday of each month. We start at the Museum, 198 Kempner Street, at 10:00 am and the walk lasts approximately 1-1/2 hours, covering about 1-1/2 miles. Reservations are appreciated but not required. Ticket fees are $10 for adults and $5 for children 12-18. Children under 12 are free. Cash, checks and credit cards are accepted. Or call the office at 281-494-0261.
