Arctic September 2010

Tuesday, September 28, 2010. The end of an adventure. Tug that helped us dock in dutch harbor. We have finally seen land and some of it was Russia! We came right through the Bering Straits and Bryon and I got very busy as birds and mammals picked up. The fog lifted just a bit so we could see 2 countries simultaneously. This was a busy time on the bridge and lots of photos of foggy land were taken. To run from weather and kill some times, we made our way to a beautiful fishing spot. Fishing on the fantail.

Monday, September 13, 2010. What am I doing here? I have asked myself this question many times during the last 10 days - and I have had many answers depending on the day! And luckily I brought chocolate for those helping me! Deck crew and CG MSTs (Marine Science Technicians). My array ready and waiting for deployment. Hydrophone mooring is lifted. Monday, September 20, 2010. Walking on (frozen) water. We went pretty far north, and are now heading southeast deeper into Canadian waters. People got good photos so I'll have to post them later. We found out the next day that the Russian icebreakers actually feed the polar bears - really not a good idea. They are curious enough without baiting them. Sunday, August 22, 2010. Beach walks with the dogs (we are dog sitting Violet). We have had people over, visited many local sites, gone to the valley twice and been to the beach numerous times. Wednesday, September 29, 2010. We celebrated Iris's birthday today! We are so fortunate in our small community to have such a strong commitment to exchange students from AFS and Rotary. I don't remember a single, exchange student from my high school days in San Diego and the school had 3x's the number of students than this one in Newport. Credit must be given to those who have organized and promoted these exchanges for many years! Kudos to you Evelyn and company. It surely helps and this village rocks!

I am starting a new blog for hosting our 2011-12 student from Italy, Elisabetta. Iris returned to Finland where she has already started school for this year. She reports that her English speaking isn't quite as fluent after just a month even though she found speaking Finnish a bit challenging upon arriving back at home. Who would have thought?
