Another Goddamn China Blog. If you want to learn more about China by way of books (and films), here is a list of my favorites, from popular non-fiction to travel books to academic texts to novels. Links likely go to Amazon unless the author has a website. Chinese author names are written with the last name first. The film list has no links because you can find them all on various streaming sites around the Internet. An asterisk in the beginning of the title means I highly, highly, highly recommend it.

Running Towards the Mountains | Another Goddamn China Blog
https://anotherchinablog.wordpress.com/2014/05/14/running-towards-the-mountains
Another Goddamn China Blog. Running Towards the Mountains. I kept running, nevertheless, even though the sidewalk narrowed to barely more than the width of me and was stuck through with trees at two foot intervals. Eventually, I crossed a canal–the one that runs through campus that I’ve always wondered about–and recognized the road where the Yuanmingyuan subway stop was located. I turned east and ran along the canal. For a while I was living here but not really doing much reading about China. Lately ...

Another Goddamn China Blog. Hutong Wanderings, Part I. This post is part of a series, number of parts as yet undetermined, about various hutong that I’ve walked through. This isn’t meant to be a definitive guide to any of the hutong. Rather, some impressions and some photographs along with whatever I know about the area. I unearthed this Beijinger article. First, I went to the oldest. It is also one of the best preserved. Certainly it’s in very good shape. The day I went, it was very quiet. Lots of p...

February | 2014 | Another Goddamn China Blog
https://anotherchinablog.wordpress.com/2014/02
Another Goddamn China Blog. Monthly Archives: February 2014. After a two-month long vacation, I’ve arrived back in the capital city in time for classes to start, the new Carsick Cars album, and a solid week of choking smog. Yeah, it’s great to be back. (Usually you can see some mountains pretty clearly down that road.). Luckily it’s supposed to clear up tomorrow (for real; not like when it was supposed to clear up yesterday obviously) with some precipitation (in the desert-like city). 31 May at XP. South...

January | 2014 | Another Goddamn China Blog

Another Goddamn China Blog. Monthly Archives: January 2014. I’ve been back for just over a month and am leaving again in just under a month. Being away from a place you have fallen very much in love with is much easier knowing you’ll absolutely be going back soon. It’s funny though, because if you had asked me last year if I would come home during the break between semesters, I might have considered it for a while but I ultimately would have said no. Would I have wanted to see my family? My girlfriend an...

May Day Travels Part I: Hangzhou | Another Goddamn China Blog
https://anotherchinablog.wordpress.com/2014/05/05/may-day-travels-part-i-hangzhou
Another Goddamn China Blog. May Day Travels Part I: Hangzhou. In the northern places where I’ve been (not that many places), the earth is yellow and the sky is dusty or blindingly clear. Cities are gray, even if they have lots of trees. This is from very limited experience; just my impressions from being in the biggest northern city, poking around other places. I went south to visit my high school friend, who’s studying abroad in Hangzhou. So nobody messes with the ox anymore…. Although I’m very co...

March | 2014 | Another Goddamn China Blog
https://anotherchinablog.wordpress.com/2014/03
Another Goddamn China Blog. Monthly Archives: March 2014. After a comparatively mild winter (looking at you, Chiberia), spring is definitively here. I haven’t worn a jacket in at least a week, the trees are in bloom, and the willows have little green sprouts. There are cherry blossoms, magnolias, peach blossoms… lots of other flowers I can’t identify. And these yellow things my dad tells me the name of every year and that I invariably forget. I know that winter is particularly bad in terms of pollution b...
