Rootsmithing: Genealogy, Methodology, and Technology. Tuesday, August 30, 2016. Digital genealogy organizing project Intermission 3: Thoughts about a hierarchical folder structure for personal research. In my previous posting, I described a folder structure based upon Ahnentafel numbers, and pointed out how it would be difficult to work with once it become complex, or if it involved a descendants project instead of an ancestral project. So what would this look like in practice as a set of folders? Digita...

Rootsmithing: Genealogy, Methodology, and Technology. Sunday, June 14, 2015. In support of Wikipedia. When speaking to others about Wikipedia, I often get reactions not unlike the attitudes toward the public family trees found all over the Web (but predominantly on Ancestry.com), namely, that you should never trust it, because it is nothing but errors. I'm not alone in these thoughts. I just discovered the following article, which expresses the same idea: "Why It's Time the World Embraced Wikipedia".

Rootsmithing: Genealogy, Methodology, and Technology. Tuesday, January 27, 2015. When wireless devices need batteries, think Eneloop. Over the years I've gone through a lot of batteries for my wireless keyboards and wireless mice. At work, the department bought me a package of name-brand rechargeable batteries and a charger, but I have not been impressed with how well those batteries recharge or how long they last before needing to recharge again. These are rated for 2100 recharge cycles, and after 5 yea...

Rootsmithing: Genealogy, Methodology, and Technology. Sunday, October 30, 2016. Digital genealogy organizing project Step 6: Naming the files. Three months ago I announced a 3-month project to organize the digital genealogy files already on my computer, so that I could then begin adding new files to an organized structure. So here we are at the end of those 3 months, and at the last major step: (re)naming the individual files. Misc folder at the beginning of my father's folder. There might also be a!

It has two top drawers, and two file drawers under those. The closest top drawer is the one that needs my immediate attention. It (and the file drawer under it) can be easily reached while I work at my computer, so I need to have in it only those things that I might need immediate access to. It occurs to me that if you obtain a new one, you should p...

Rootsmithing: Genealogy, Methodology, and Technology. Saturday, January 02, 2016. How Time Flies: Reflections on 9 Years as Local Society President. This morning I was honored to turn over the reins of the Florida Genealogical Society of Tampa to its new president, Tammy Patascher. I made sure to give her the "official" presidential gavel, and the box in which to store it until the next turnover. (I don't recall my even using it during the time I was president.). I could not have led the society without ...
