It is estimated that about one-third of the escapees survived the liberation. Even those escapees lucky enough to find shelter with the Poles often found themselves in grave danger. The initial 30 acres of the Sobibor camp area was later expanded to 145 acres. Jews were employed to provide services for the Nazi staff: tailors and shoemakers, shops for carpentry, mechanical and other maintenance needs.
