Trotsky's Children: Louis Proyect's Pro-Poverty Alliance
http://trotskyschildren.blogspot.com/2015/06/louis-proyects-pro-poverty-alliance.html
A Republican Looks Left. Wednesday, June 10, 2015. Louis Proyect's Pro-Poverty Alliance. Louis Proyect kindly posted video. From the recent Left Forum meeting in New York. It's a nice summary of the travails of the modern Left. As a leader of the North Star. And here's the problem. Does Mr. Proyect really think that either the FNLM or the Sandinistas made their countries any richer? Both movements plunged their countries into decades-long civil wars that killed thousands of people. Yes, one can lay s...

Thoughts of Chairperson Mikey: February 2010
http://thoughts-of-chairperson-mikey.blogspot.com/2010_02_01_archive.html
Thoughts of Chairperson Mikey. Life is not an easy matter. You cannot live through it without falling into frustration and cynicism unless you have before you a great idea which raises you above personal misery, above weakness, above all kinds of perfidy and baseness." Leon Trotsky. Saturday, February 27, 2010. There is a new magazine out this week, produced by my friends in the Fourth International. More when it becomes available. Links to this post. Friday, February 26, 2010. An excellent new blog.

Trotsky's Children: Money and Gold
http://trotskyschildren.blogspot.com/2015/02/money-and-gold.html
A Republican Looks Left. Wednesday, February 25, 2015. By John Tamny gives me an opportunity to opine on some topics I've been thinking a lot about. Mr. Tamny expresses an opinion common on the libertarian Right, also held by people like Steve Forbes and Rand Paul. These are people I respect because they get the biggest of the big issues right, namely that economic freedom. Is the most effective way of reducing poverty and improving living standards. So I'm distressed to have to disagree with them. Even ...

Trotsky's Children: Against Reformism in Greece
http://trotskyschildren.blogspot.com/2015/06/against-reformism-in-greece.html
A Republican Looks Left. Thursday, June 25, 2015. Against Reformism in Greece. Trotskyists are uncompromising. The class line cannot be crossed. Accordingly they oppose popular fronts like Syriza, which consist of unprincipled alliances with bourgeois parties. That Syriza's coalition partner is a small, center-right outfit called ANEL simply demonstrates the perfidy. Regards the whole movement as nothing but a bourgeois front, just waiting to sell out the working class as soon as politically expedient.

Trotsky's Children: Book Review: Lih's Biography of Lenin
http://trotskyschildren.blogspot.com/2014/06/book-review-lihs-biography-of-lenin.html
A Republican Looks Left. Sunday, June 22, 2014. Book Review: Lih's Biography of Lenin. I just finished reading Lars Lih's short biography of Lenin. Born in 1870, Vladimir Ilich Ulyanov morphed into V. I. Lenin only after his death. In fleeing from the tsar in 1900 he borrowed a passport from a man named "Lenin," which our hero turned into the pseudonym, N. Lenin. Legend has it that N stood for Nikolai. He acquired his birth initials only post mortem. Lenin's elder brother, Alexander, was involved in a fa...

Trotsky's Children: Jeff Mackler's Greek Post-Mortem
http://trotskyschildren.blogspot.com/2015/08/jeff-macklers-greek-post-mortem.html
A Republican Looks Left. Wednesday, August 12, 2015. Jeff Mackler's Greek Post-Mortem. Jeff Mackler reprises Syriza's humiliating capitulation to the Troika. Mr. Mackler gets some basic facts all wrong. Here's the big howler:. A quick check of the CIA Factbook. Shows that Greece has no shipbuilding industry at all. The top four shipbuilding nations. So it's hardly surprising that shipbuilding is untaxed. Even for the most devout revolutionary taxing a non-existent industry will prove to be a challenge.

Trotsky's Children: Subway Values
http://trotskyschildren.blogspot.com/2014/08/subway-values.html
A Republican Looks Left. Friday, August 1, 2014. Referring to break-dancing teenagers, sermonizing preachers, and homeless beggars, Louis Proyect. And then follows a several thousand word essay about how efforts to stop this behavior is unjustified. Specifically, he is against the broken window theory. Or the tactics of the street crimes unit. Policy. Mayor DeBlasio campaigned on ending that, but has so far reneged on that promise. Mr Proyect opposes any variant of stop and frisk. Beyond this, the police...

Trotsky's Children: Precarious Taxis
http://trotskyschildren.blogspot.com/2015/07/precarious-taxis.html
A Republican Looks Left. Saturday, July 25, 2015. This post has two parents: an interview with Charlie Post, reprinted in International Viewpoint. The official publication of the Fourth International. (I have added them, belatedly, the This Blog's Beat. And also Mayor DeBlasio's fight with Uber. Which he has now lost decisively. Mr Post takes issue with the word precariat. As a useful descriptor of social reality. That's a portmanteau of the words precarious. This was a corrupt, mob-run outfit whose only...

Trotsky's Children: Book Review: Grover Cleveland
http://trotskyschildren.blogspot.com/2015/07/book-review-grover-cleveland.html
A Republican Looks Left. Friday, July 17, 2015. Book Review: Grover Cleveland. A biography by H. Paul Jeffers, is sadly out of print. It deserves to be re-issued. Grover Cleveland is probably the best president you never heard of. His obscurity is due in part to his name. These days, Grover. Cleveland was the first Democrat president since James Buchanan, who lost to Lincoln in 1860. The Republicans, despite having won the Civil War and abolishing slavery, had squandered their reputation through grot...
