By Susan Solterman Audette. Tuesday, August 24, 2010. Jack Pine and Kirkland Warblers. This example of the Jack Pine (Pinus banksiana) is the first time I truly learned to identify the tree. Another pioneer species, like the Redcedar and Fireweed, it's one of the first trees to grow following a forest fire. Perhaps because of this, the Jack Pine is a dominant species in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area. The trees cones, known as fire cones, can stay closed during extremely high temperatures.

This particular Scientific Natural Area consists of two former river bed terraces (created by a retreating glacier) with swales separating each terrace. Both terraces are restored prairie dunes. A good example of a transitional area exists between the prairie and the alluvial (old river bottom) forest, starting with an oak woodland and eventually becoming more dense and forest-like.
