Distrusting concentrations of power. When you hear the word “ anarchism. David Brooks observes how, while federal politics is wrapped up in detached partisanship, city politics is very much grounded in reality. Brooks writes:. Are fighting to take back. Their land from those who are exploiting it. We can expect that more local autonomy would lead to better custodianship of the environment. So suppose they create their own jobs; suppose they elect or appoint not 10 leaders but hundreds and even thousands ...

Our corporations are leaving us behind. Corporations have instead focused on their brands. They have been buying cheaply-made products, marketing them, and selling them at a much higher price than the cost of manufacture. Where they used to create solid manufacturing jobs, they now create so-called McJobs. Observes that–though it seems like corporations keep getting bigger–they are actually becoming smaller and more lightweight as they shed employees and factories. How far we’ve been left behind. Why we ...

Diminishing food production: a big problem. | The Daily Banana
https://dailybanana.wordpress.com/2011/06/05/diminishing-food-production-a-big-problem
Diminishing food production: a big problem. While we face many humanity-endangering threats in the 21st century, perhaps the biggest is the prospect that population growth may outpace grain production. Already we live on a planet where nearly a billion people are undernourished because of poverty and unavailability of food. Food riots broke out in the summer of 2008. The high price of food may have precipitated. Than ever before. The West has helped farmers pump groundwater to irrigate their fields a...

Tender Nuggets: June 2012

Monday, June 18, 2012. The truth is, the amount of disdain I reserved for imaginary bloggers at age 18 has only been surpassed by the amount of disdain I currently reserve for my 18 year old self. I was such a shit. Blogs are good. They’re fine. Some are better than others. In that sense, blogs are a lot like cheese. Are you following this? Call me simple but I always like to see a nice preamble when I dive into something new. So that’s what this is. Anyway, me being 6, my mind was malleable and I was al...

Food insecurity | The Daily Banana
https://dailybanana.wordpress.com/2011/02/22/food-insecurity
Some have argued that the unrest in the Middle East has been caused in part by the recent surge in food prices around the world. The average Tunisian or Egyptian spends much more. On food than the average Middle Eastern citizen. Last time food prices spiked, we had the food riots. During the summer of 2008. Now prices have increased beyond the records set in 2008. The Food and Agriculture Organization says that food prices are higher now than they ever have been. Has become a major issue for many countri...

Caroline Opines: November 2011

Wednesday, November 30, 2011. First of the Season! Now that the weather is cool and blustery, my desire to knit has boiled back up into my bones. I finished this hat over the weekend, and I'm fairly pleased with how it turned out. I was inspired by Alex Tinsley's "A Most Bespeckled Hat". Though there are some key differences in the finished products. Hers uses a much thicker yarn, while mine was made out of some yard sale purchased sock weight stuff Paul's Mom gave me for my b-day. Here's what I learned!

http://carolineopines.blogspot.com/2012_01_01_archive.html
Thursday, January 26, 2012. Oh wow, where did the month of January go? Is it possible I blew through it obliviously, due to my newest obsession? Paul and I have been playing a lot of Go. This month. A LOT of go. Like almost everyday. To the point where it like starts seeping into your dreams. I guess a certain level of drama is inherent in the game though, especially if Hikaru No Go. 2001) is to be believed. Oh what's that? Yes Yes we are. Friday, January 13, 2012. Particle Man is from the Water Nation.

Saturday, May 12, 2012. Ok- Long overdue update. But I felt this warranted sharing. Currently, I am convalescing from a very excellent bachelorette party. Paul is out this evening at the boy version. Since I recently busted my laptop, and blogging is nearly impossible on a tablet (this is basically also exhibit A in the case of why I haven't blogged all year), I am using Paul's computer. And Kimbra Music Videos. The future is crazy/creatively manipulative. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). I like to read.
