They have built themselves a hair salon just outside the prison which takes paying customers and teaches the inmates the skills of hair-braiding. SOSK built a classroom upon request from the women: they wanted to learn to read and write, some hoping to finish school. Between school lessons, sewing classes and craft-making lessons, the small classroom was bursting! Together, the prison and SOSK built a work-shop to cater for this diversification and growth. I try to visit Kenya 2/3 times a year. I take money that has been donated. Working with the locals, we identify the needs and where spending will have the greatest impact. Then we go shopping. To identify a need right there and then to purchase, deliver and see the difference almost immediately, is an incredibly humbling and rewarding feeling. SOSK is different to many ‘aid’ programs in that:-. 100% of all donations and funds raised go to the programs in Kenya. All costs are absorbed personally.

Twenty years ago, I was fortunate enough to teach in an isolated girls’ boarding school in the west of Kenya. In 2009, I returned to Kenya with my 14-year-old daughter. We visited the school and stayed with a missionary family in the regional centre of Naivasha. The husband and wife team operate several programs aimed at transforming women’s lives. To raise funds and secure sponsorship that would allow SOSK to complete construction of the. This centre would exist as a well-spring to provide physical relief and protection, to teach women practical, income-producing skills, and to create a change in their outlook by stimulating accomplishment, pride and the development of strong ideals. The estimated cost as per the construction surveyor is A$65,000. It costs $32/week to feed the 50 children attending our childcare/school at Church On The River.
