The accessible haven for wildlife. Little Spotted Kiwi 2017. SOSSI AGM 31 May. Now that there are no rabbits and possums within the Sanctuary, native plant seedlings are coming up everywhere. Unfortunately so are the pest plants, so with support from the Auckland Council Biosecurity and Hibiscus Matters we’ve been running some advertisements encouraging Whangaparaoa residents to remove weeds and so stop them spreading to cliff-tops, reserves and the Sanctuary. The revegetation plan aims to develop a habitat linkage with Tiritiri Matangi, to connect up existing areas of forest within the sanctuary and to provide suitable habitat for reintroduction of flora and fauna. At the tip of the Whangaparaoa Peninsula, Shakespear Regional Park has sheltered bays, wetlands, regenerating native forest, cliffs, historic places and a lookout with views second to none. It offers nice walks and beaches and is an easy 50 minutes drive from the Harbour Bridge. Inside the sanctuary fence! Please check for your vehicle for any other unwanted stowaways. As I look out my window from Okoromai Bay Bed and Breakfast, the sun is shining on the park. The green of the grass after the rain, the blue sky, with clouds drifting by, the birds flying overhead, makes for the perfect picture. The area that we will be planting grasses in, is amongst other things a habitat for skinks such as the Moko (pictured above).
